Generic tugs
« on: July 07, 2023, 10:18:19 am »

Is there anyone whom has just made a generic type modern tug one that’s not a kit ?

a tug that’s just made up and if so any images to share.

Still working on a mould for mine as yet and then being in the northeast nearer to Sunderland than anywhere else not to sure where it’s going to sale yet.

Hope to have something to show in a few weeks or so.

the hulls of the majority harbour tugs all seem to follow the same pattern with the superstructures to suit the tasks involved. nemesis

I don't know what constitutes a generic modern tug.

Tugs start around 6 metres and the big offshore & ocean going tugs are around 60 metres long.
Harbour tugs can have birdcage bridges but many don't.

There are multiple drive systems & I haven't even mentioned roto tugs or many other types.

I would argue that there are very many different types of tug and that there is no one "generic type"

Probably best to find a type you like and get decent information on and work around that.

The danger with designing your own is that you can get bogged down in the detail you need to incorporate and its dimensions and design.

As said above, modern tugs come in all shapes and sizes and with many different propulsion systems. There is no generic design, they are all suited to particular situations and requirements and built accordingly.

Toesup did one back in the day... He just made it up.  :-)

Ray Malone did Shuswap I suppose it's not made up, but scratch built, not a kit.

I did an SDM tug. Another scratch built, but I had to make it up, not a kit.

And then a Damen tug on a springer hull. A generic springer tug hull with a Damen superstructure I liked.

Mine will be a made up tug as well I have however bought a few bits from mac mouldings .
But everything else will have to be made up.

As for the superstructure not sure yet what’s going where.
I like some bits of the Ayton cross like the bridge but I also like the inwards sloping stern in case I like the idea of another type of craft altogether.

Already made the funnels a little like the Ayton cross but not the same the exhaust are the tops off of my inhalers .
So yes it looks like it’s going to be whatever I can find …to repurpose…

Looks  so far to be approx. 14 inches wide and 46 inches long with the height at mid ships being 8 1/2 inches. With an inboard  squared sloping transom.  The bow height is  more like 12 inches. so not to small

All this will be in a split mould.

But now thinking maybe I should alter it now for a stern drag trawler.  Guess I will have to see how it looks.

If you like the Ayton Cross tug have a look here for a nice 42" model "kit":

Did one a few years ago bought a part made one off of this forum.

Looked a bit rough when I finished it but I have a few holding still problems with hands .

But the enjoyment comes from making and building them.

Still trying the matchstick modelling  thing. But can only do it for a hour a time and then spend the next three days unsticking my fingers and removing matchsticks stuck to my hands at the same time.

Still it’s enjoyable and fun for me .

just a little note, at 46" long, have you any idea of the ballast weight you will need.
My Northsider took quite a bit and my Axel nearly two stone.
That may give you an idea, nemesis
