I am rebuilding the U570 by Darnell Models, what I would like to know is if any one out there knows if I can get a air compressor
to fit in the box .I have the old steam engine piston type but its slow and would like to change it .

The old air pump system are quite power hungry.
I converted my Darnell to a Freon system using a small tin of air brush propellant and a micro Festo pneumatic valve.

Buy 1 off those cheapy portable tyre pumps and remove the guts, if you want to run 6v's
then best replace the 12v motor.

I tried that Andy, the current draw was about 8 Amps!  :o
What motor and gearing did you use?

Have a look here-

The thomas pumps are diaphragm based, so zero maintenance. They will clear your tank in seconds, draw minimal current(high quality Buhler motor), balanced, cheap. Won't pump high pressure though, so if you want to run over 20psi, you'll need to look for a piston compressor.

Smart products also do a similar line in air pumps, however I don't think they will sell in single quantites now.

I have some neat air compressors, pretty powerful and small. They have TWO pipe connectors, unlike the Smart pump - much easier to connect up.

Have a look at  http://www.caswellplating.com/models/pumps.html

Also have a positive gear pump for water and several neat switches  see http://www.caswellplating.com/models/bhm.html

We can mail this stuff to the UK too.

Are air pumps much different than air compressors?  Higher volume maybe?  Just for comparison I got this very cheap air compressor from an auto parts store (napa) here in the US for about $15, it's cheap to be sure and laughable that it is sold to pump up auto tires from a car battery, it would take several hours at least.  Anyway, they make them cheap, it's an option if it works for you:
