After building a few small scratch built scale R/C model planes and a live steam traction engine, I am back to marine stuff, so next build now started- a scratch built paddle steamer, Fusilier, in 1:48 scale.
Got most of the bits, including Clevedon Steam's Virgo paddle engine- pic enclosed.
Just about to finish the basic hull- pic to follow. I had to increase the draught by an inch, just to get enough displacement for the projected weight.
To scale, she will now draw 8' 8", instead of 4' 8".
Will be building my own feathering paddles- a few months before she will be finished....

Does anyone know of a source of 1:48 scale anchor winches? or even drawings of a typical 1888 winch?
Preferably not white metal- banned on this build, as I am keeping the weight down.

Marine steam winches were certainly available and used at the turn of the Century, however usually in larger tonnage vessels over that of the Fuiliser, so without knowing the equipment as installed on the vessel, it is quite possible that a double hand-cranked anchor hauling winch was used

According to the link details......https://www.clydeships.co.uk/view.php?ref=12913 you appear to have quite a leeway in design, as it appears the vessel was built with the Bridge aft of the funnel, however at some stage the Bridge was relocated to Fwd of the funnel

The following link shows a huge selection of marine winches [both hand-cranked and steam], which could be constructed with relatively light weight and modest cost of materials

I have also attached a few images of my 1:16 scaled double hand-crank winch which was simple to make...the thing that intrigued me was the hexagonal [6] sided wooden drum.......[snd the 12 sided drum support plate

], which was prototypical on hand-cranked winches for vessels of the year [early to mid 1800's], and tonnage

[the studded chain & anchor will be chemically aged/blackened before installation]

Thanks, Derek- I had already Googled likely pics of winches, but nothing came up.
I haven't got a pic showing any detail of Fusilier's winch, other than these two of her 1926 refit. Wish they had been printed a bit lighter.
From these, it looks like she got a new steam winch in the refit- they are not identical.
Other pic is not Fusilier, but MacBrayne's slightly earlier and rather larger Iona.
Seems also to be missing the drums on the ends of the shaft.
I will be building a very early version of Fusilier, with the aft bridge, and only two lifeboats.

Looking roughly like a hull, but a lot of filling and sanding to go. There is only so much twisting you can do with 0.8 mm ply; the bendy bits are planked.
The lines were very much a guesstimate, as the draught has nearly doubled from the original.
The decks are just paper templates- I will fit these after the inside of the hull is painted, and the 40 or so port holes drilled.

Progress is slow- today I drilled the portholes.
Next the sponson platforms, then the tricky bit- feathering paddles....

That hull is looking really good, nice work, just a heads up many years ago I made the feathering paddles designed by ET Westbury........well months of work...(and it they were driven by my own design steam plant)....and lots of water splash , lots of laughs....and going astern...hha, and when you look at how much the paddles feathered, is about 6 degrees , I would just go fixed....just a thought

Diameter will be about 105 mm- it's a bit fiddly....

Stunning work! The paddle wheel is beautifully made. Very well done.

I'm a member of the Model Steamer Club of Glasgow sailing on the Southside of the city at Rouken Glen park. I'm not sure if we would have any plans or information for a steam winch for you. I'll ask members if anyone has anything that might help your project.
We sail 1:48 scale Clyde and Western Isles steamer models and have several scale Clyde piers which are very popular with the public and modellers alike! You would be very welcome to sail with us if that could be arranged once you have completed the model. Our Spring Show in April is very popular and a great start to the sailing season. Feel free to message me by PM.
Meantime I will ask members for winch info.

Looking very nice indeed. As a thought with my steam powered models where the engine/boiler is enclosed I use a small computer fan to duct air into the boiler room and this works well and I have as many open hatches as possible.
