Remote On/Off switch
« on: September 15, 2023, 02:00:39 pm »

I have a fairly big, and heavy, Trent Lifeboat.  In order to switch the power on I have to remove the upperworks which invariably results in me breaking something off.  Is there such a thing as a remote swich, similar to a car key fob which I can put in circuit to turn it on/off.  I realise that I can probably hide the switch under something but thought this might be an easier idea.

Perhaps you should consider a magnetic switch similar to what the sub guys use.  It allows you to turn the model on or off via the properly placed magnet.  This alleviates the need to open everything up to activate your switch.

Yes I agree with Doc, magnetic reed switches are a great way to do what you want . I've used them, On and off (sorry) for 50 years, without any problems.
Another way is to use a 3.5 mms Jack socket and have a brass fitting such as an elongated bollard to plug into it shorting the contacts to switch on the radio.
Simple methods are often the most trouble free.
If you were to use a remote sensor, it would need permanent power source to receive the signal.

Thanks for the replies.  Never gave a thought to having to have a permanent supply.  Will go down the reed switch idea, I think.

Someone suggested a jack plug/socket, also consider deans type plug socket, or even switch inside activated by a pull on rod.....

I use this one on my Fairplay 30:

Works very well and no need for an mechanical relay, unless you use more then 20A.
Magnet is hidden in a rollerhead which I use to activate both on and off reedcontact.
