Monoperm motor powering
« on: October 01, 2023, 01:37:05 pm »

Sorry this is a dumb question, but I am an electronics ignoramus:

I have a Monoperm 6v 3amp motor which I suspect will be too powerful for the boat I am putting it in.

If I used 3x1.5v AA batteries in a pack giving 4.5 volts will this reduce the speed and will it be a problem?

Monoperm motors arent very powerful but do run about 5000 rpm. Could you not run on 6 volts but with a smaller prop.

Hi Bob,

I have a 4.5v Monoperm in my Krabbenkutter which runs beautifully off 3xAA.

When I bought the motor for the boat I am finishing off now many many years ago the shopkeeper didn't have a 4.5v in stock so he suggested I buy the 6v and insert a control resistor which I did. I am now putting in an electric speed controller instead. I would rather keep the prop the size it is with the kit.

Cheers
Colin

Drop the voltage to a 4.8v pack the motor will chug along nicely and pull next to no amps i suspect.

Adding the electronic speed controller will allow you to control the motor from the handset better, gentle thumb or finger movements will keep it smooth and if you need the extra power push forward more on the handset for those get you out of trouble moments.

Depending on the ESC, it may require a minimum supply voltage.  If it has a BEC, it will require over 6v input in order to make the step-down regulator work right.

You can always use the throttle stick to control the speed... no need to push it to All Ahead Full all the time.
