Just read that HMS Medusa won't be able to make the 80th D-Day Landing commemoration, £8000 for 6000 gallons of diesel required for return trip to France. They're saving for next year.

Being a round trip of about 200 miles thats 30 gallons to the mile. Seems a little excessive think our aircraft carriers can do better than that

Entirely built of wood and powered by diesel engines, she is not fast (12 knots) but has huge endurance of 2500 miles. O0 O0 O0

The  old now gone for razors the R M A S Arrochar, burnt 12.5 tons of diesel in 24 hours at 14.5 knots or 1/2 ton per hour.

That would give a fuel capacity of about 75000 gallons must be one big fuel tank

According to the Medusa Trust......


Fuel tanks were provided for 1250 gallons in the main tanks and 300 gallons additional in the engine room. The HDMLs had an endurance of about 2000 miles at 10 knots.[1250+300 = 1550 gallons = 5867 litre x 0.85 SG = 4986 kg

Maybe the 56 were :-X  long tonnes @ 2240 lb each]??

hi all


This information comes from a book 'Motorboat and Yachting' 14th edition - I think it must be from about 1949 - or somewhere round that.   It gives the specs of the Harbour Defence motor launch.  It states 'length overall 72 ft  beam 15 ft  draught (mean) 4 ft 4 ins  displacement 46 tons.   This is the interesting bit, because I myself always thought these were a hi octane petrol engine, as the MTBs.  So here we go....machinery twin diesel approximately 150 h.p., each.  Gardber, Gleniffer or Thorneycroft - these were the power plant.
Speed - 11/12 knots maximum (according to the make of engine) - maximum continuous 11.4 knots.
Endurance - 1000 miles at 12 knots, 2000 miles at 10 knots.
Fuel capacity - 1500 gallon.    Provision for an additional deck tank of more than 200 gallons.


That is one bit of information.

sorry not disputing the facts want to build one of these myself soon i was merely commenting on the first post that it needed 2000 gallons to get to normandy and back

I often wonder - these people who come out with these statements - think by pleading poverty people are going to pile in with funding for their projects.  Sometimes, like in this case, which I think, it may have backfired on themselves - because people now can source a lot more information from the internet and sometimes it proves they are telling a few porky pies.  Aren't all charities prone to stretching the truth a little bit.


One of the things about a topic like this - it can bring about a lot of information which can be useful to use modellers.
