YOU HAVE ONLY GONE AND BLOWN THE TOP OFF
« on: October 20, 2023, 12:59:36 pm »

Look at this - today we certainly have a storm! We have lost the top off our lighthouse in South Shields - picture courtesy of Steven Lomas from Facebook.

That is the second time, the first time was when some errant gunners blew the top well off, that is why it is smaller than Tynemouths lighthouse on the other side of the river. nemesis

Doing an online research and find no evidence of a shell strike on the light - only evidence I can find is that the North pier was destroyed in a storm a few years after it had been completed.   Also, they had to fit the groyne light, which is further up the river, because the two piers interfered with the flow of the river and caused a build up of silt.

The other thing South Shields pier is famous for is that there was a wooden doll picked up by a workmen who was employed in constructing the light house.  The doll was placed in the wet cement.   The outline of the doll can still be seen today.
