I Class Destroyer/Algerine Class Minesweeper
« on: October 21, 2023, 03:01:09 pm »

Hi guys, just putting this out there,

I served on 3 ships in the Royal Navy and have done the Airfix models of them.

My grandad served on 5 ships in World War 2 and would love to build some models of his.

My idea would be to build a RC wooden model of either an "I Class" destroyer (HMS Imogen) or an Algerine Class Minesweeper (HMS Ready).

Does anyone know of any plans available for the above ships  although I may be a bit ambitious lol

There is a plan of HMS Rattlesnake - algerine class, available from Cornwall model boats I think. You could also speak to Dean's Marine who do a kit of an Algerine class.

In addition to James’s comments- for the I class destroyer I suggest looking at the H class as the I’s were essentially repeated H class destroyers with slightly modified bridges and a ten torpedo tube layout (two sets of five). I believe that if you want a hull in 1/72 scale try Fleetscale models but in plan form there is another John Lambert drawing of HMS Harvester which would give you enough detail to build an I class destroyer:

RichieS,
A plan for HMS Ivanhoe was published in the July 1992 issue of the magazine Model Boats.  the scale was 1/144 and construction mainly from balsa sheet.

The publication of "British Destroyers A-I and Tribal class" by Les Brown, ISBN : 978-1-84832-023-9, will give some basic info and a small scale line drawing. It seems they built to be converted to minelaying if required and some did serve in that purpose for a while. But the publication is aimed at modelers.
