NEC Model Boat Show
« on: December 01, 2023, 11:54:00 pm »

Seems to be an odd rumour that the NEC will be hosting a model boat show in 2024, any other contributor heard this rumour?

I've not heard anything about it, but would definitely be there if it happens.

The NEC is a very expensive place to hold a show. I doubt that there is enough commercial interest to support it.

If a show couldn't be made to work financially at the Warwick site, I really can't see how it would work at the NEC.

It's also hell to get to the neck and car parking costs a fortune, it's easier & cheaper by train.

This sounds as if some one has seen the Boat Live show they put on and thought , Oh its a Model Boat Show !!

I would have thought that if they were planning a Model Boats show then they would have actively been contacting Clubs and Traders, would not like to think how much the NEC would be cost when Haydock Park was double figures !!

There was a model show at the NEC around 1990ish? - I exhibited on the OMRA stand -
I recall taking a long walk from the car parks beside the main lake, where ic model power boats were in action (yes you did read that correct 'IC' powerboats) this was filmed by one of the TV channels and broadcast to advertise the event.

Probably refers to Key Model World Live - https://www.keymodelworld.com/modelworldlive
Trains and plastic kits as that's the magazines involved (Hornby and Airfix mags). No RC boats. But then it is the first year.

:P  Ignore as such. Would help if I had brain in gear and looked under  'Commercial Events and News'  {-) :-))

 Just a general query.

What model shows are still going - either on the mainland UK or Europe?

I don't think we have much going on here in N. Ireland but have always fancied going to one.

Cheers

The only model boat event that i know of is (probably) at Windermere around the 21st of June. There will (probably) one or two at Southport during the year. I expect.
Dortmund was the best model show overall in the World during the 1980's -90's, but from what I hear and see that has fallen of its perch a bit in the last ten years or so.

The Dortmund show like any show might not be as busy as it used to be, but it is still far better than any UK model shows !

I went to the Dortmund show just before the pandemic and I didn't find a show in decline at all , quite the reverse in fact , it was awesome. I even rode on the 7¼" live steam loco running freely around one of the exhibition halls which included a stretch through the large r/c vehicle display . From memory there were 8 off large halls , showing all different disciplines , all of which were to incredibly high standards . A stand out feature for me was their pro-active encouragement of youngsters , both boys and girls . In fact it was a girl who won one of the tug control contests on the boat pool ( approx 12 times the size of Blackpool Show pool ) A better idea of size may be gained from watching an 8 foot model  of Bismark sailing around it on You Tube. They even had 2 large man-cooling fans for the large yacht events. The 2 full days I was in the exhibition was not enough to see everything in full detail . The trade stands included both Deans Marine and RDG amongst the large number of traders.  Should anyone be interested enough I can supply information from the show guide I got whilst there . I could also forward the e-mail I've recently received for the 2024 show.  As an aside , rail fare from Doncaster-Stanstead was £79 advance booking and flight Stanstead-Dortmund £53.

That may well be the case and probably should be, after all the money that is poured in to it though it depends on what your after of course. As a matter of interest though, in what way are you qualified to pass such an opinion. For interest sake how many UK model shows or more specifically, model boat shows/regatta’s have you attended in say, the last 20 years or so?

LB,
I would also like to know have you ever been to the Dortmund show. If not you are not in a position to knock it.
Me I do not both with the UK shows now, I look at the traders going. Do not see many, so is a waste for me to attend.
The last Blackpool show there was only 2 traders I wanted to see.
So Dortmund is the one for me.

I Exibited there last year with my two RC ferries.  Yes the show is smaller than 10 - 15 years ago. It is still the biggest in Europe.
The boat section this year had only 2 boat traders, Mainly due to the stuiped cost of stand rental . I have head figgures and its mad. Still a great show to go to.
The only boat show that could be on par with Dortmund boat section was Warwick . Sadly Warwick is no more .

Dortmund was on my bucket list , and pleased I went . Another on my bucket list is Friedrichshafen Modelbau , which is even bigger than Dortmund  , and this year's show posted 46, 000 (!!) visitors and a 400 m² square deep sailing pool .

Not surprised that Friedrichshafen Modelbau is on your bucket list. Been once when Ryan Air was flying direct. I would go again if there was a direct flight from London.
Also near the show is a Zeppelin Museum to visit.
