When selecting a new project I opt for:

  • Small size - less than 2 feet optimal less than 1 feet in length.
  • Something new - new construction technique - new propulsion type - etc.
  • The next new project will be SKARSVAAG 880P.

Skarsvaag 880P is a Waterjet propelled work vessel with a length of 8.80 meters.
In the scale of 1:40 it gives a length of approx 22 cm excluding the water-jet extension (1 foot limit) .

has a length of 22cm.


The concept of waterjet propelling seems it bit more complex than the standard setup using a propeller and a rudder.
You can’t just reuse your knowledge and standard setup regarding RC equiement. Also, the waterjet itself has to be fitted in the hull. A task in its own right.


I’ve chosen to use the Spymaker as the basis for my model of the Skarsvaag.
It will not be an exact scale model but I’ll attempt to capture the characteristics of the original.

First job was to remove the origional 'deck' using a knife a and slight amount of violence.

Then the origionel 'deck' was used as template for a 10mm balsa mittle deck.
The miittle deck has cut-aways for access for to RC/motor/battery.

The 10mm balsa deck was glued to the original hull.

The balsa deck was sanded using the faithful Proxxon sander to ensure vertical mounting of bulwarks.

The new deck is made of 1mm styrene.
The new deck consists of a lower and upper part.
The lower and upper part each consists of an inner and an outer part.
The outer parts are glued to the hull, the inner parts are not glued to the hull but can slide to enable RC/motor access.

Next step is the 'heavy' fenders attached to the bulwarks/hull.

In order to support to support the bulwarks and the fendering a wood/brass support was added at the bow of the vessel.

I find it difficult deduct if the fendering is an integral part of the aluminum hull or if they are made from rubber.

In any case I've made them from 8x8 mm balsa and later they were painted 'rubber' orange.
In order to bend the balsa according to the hull shape I created a small jig from a MDF wood sheet.

Before the balsa was bend in the jig they were soaked in ammonia for approx 48 hours.
A very smelly job. Do it outside in the garden if possible.
