Vosper Thornycroft Concept FAC
« on: December 31, 2023, 08:05:38 pm »

Many years ago when we were newer model boaters we bought a drawing and a concept brochure from eBay. The real vessel was never conceptualised into orders so only exists on paper and possibly a builders model that was probably destroyed years ago. We rather liked the look of the proposed vessel especially the bow so we built a working model in late 2007/2008. We decided over Christmas that she needed a rebuild and a tidy up so Dad has been carrying out that task whilst I’m doing a build for Model Boats magazine which should be in magazine for February edition.
The real vessel was never named so we decided on a speedy name hence HMS Velocity and built to 1/24 scale. The Oto missile launchers are huge when you look at the boxiness however it adds to the vessels aggressive looks. Hopefully she will be back on the water very soon.

So were the planned Missile launchers from the Oto conglomerate, the Aspide Mk x Systems launchers? [unbuilt secret projects]

Wiki confirms 13 Countries have purchased later versions of the Aspide Systems, but not the UK/Britian

Hi Derek

As far as I know from the brochure they were potential weapons so I don’t know if they were ever purchased. As typical for most British systems we liked renaming systems, the director control system was going to be called ‘Sea Archer’ according to the brochure. The Bofors was going to be larger 57mm version in what we would call a stealth turret. Two MTU engines were planned to drive this vessel at high speed.

Thank you to KitS and philk for the kind comments  :-))

Hi Nick, a lovely model to start with and a load of opportunities to play with the detailing and even her nationality. %)                     How many were the "Many years...." since you got the brochure because its quite probable/possible the design was actually used, whether officially or not, by any of dozens of navies from the Med to the Far East via Africa with armament packages, such as the Iranian Shahab, from East or West.Have fun!Tony

Hi Tony

Many thanks, she is a looker!
We got the plans in 2007 but the design date was 1981 on the drawings. So it is entirely possible the design was borrowed by foreign navies for their use ok2
