RN Need parking sensors

It is not the first time HMS Chiddingfold has been involved in such an incident. In 2021, also off the coast of Bahrain, it struck HMS Penzance, a ship of the same class as HMS Bangor.

Was aboard this years ago for a burial at sea. Are they still 'Deltic' powered?

Derek, surprised she had CATs when the young Quorn used Deltic’s.

Saw a report that she'd just come out of a contractor refit and she stuck in astern and they couldn't get her out of gear fast enough to avoid the bump

Looks like the contractors rewired one of the engines back to front causing the engine to go astern when commanded to go ahead.......Someone in that contractors company will be facing a HUGE bill for repairs from the MoD for this

Thanks for the link Dave :-))

Question ………..had Chiddingfold just come out from having engine / wiring repairs?

I would have thought they would have used her engines to get her to the point where she needed to go astern and would have had some indication of the fault. {:-{ {:-{

Seems strange that allowing for parallel parking manoeuvres , the guy in charge (CO) should allow 'Chidd' to be in such an acute position within the length of Bangor?

One of the dangers off having wire and digital software controls, every engine movement works correctly for some time then bang the controls do their own thing. The SAL's had wired controls and every now and again the controls do their own thing, because the software controlling the system became corrupt. My friend was driving the Salmaid up through the inner islands of West Scotland and the engine went suddenly from full ahead to full astern for no reason. Myself on the Salmoor twice for a month when on had to use the 360 degree bow thruster to work the vessel for about 4 weeks each time until we could software engineers down to fix it. Remember being told about RFA Blue Rover being brought out of the sea lock into 3 basin, the pilot tried to slow her down and she went faster, they quickly realised the engine control had failed , they stopped engines and quickly ordered the attendant tugs to secure, not before she bumped HMS Triumph up the stern, which parted several of her mooring wires. So these bumps do happen every now and again do to mechanical failure or sftware suddenely having out of the blue software failure.

Heard that Chidd had been pulled out of its parking space by tugs and was 'Steamed up' to LEAVE.

Talking of other vibes, I know that the RFA Rover class developed a case of their rudders dropping of at sea, RMAS Rollicker in the late 1970's salvaged one in the Pentland firth and I remember early 1970's the RFA Baccus and Hebe were late arriving at Chatham to discharge stores because they had to tow a Rover class which had lost their rudders. Another more funny event in Chatham in the 1960's was when a Destroyer fresh out of refit was steaming across the basin to the Locks to sail to trials. As she approached the locks they tried to slow her approach, so they rang down slow astern , but to no effect then it was half astern but she increased speed then it was full astern. She leapt out of the water and tried to mount the steps by the lock wiping out her forefoot, after wards they blamed the dockyard mattey's for connecting the telegraph the wrong way round(wonder did they do a bridge check before moving)any the op start after that all vessels were cold moved into the Locks, except conventional subs.

The refit was carried out in Bahrain, so not a Royal Dockyard more an Emir Dockyard. The facility in Bahrain is a joint US/UK run.
