What a superb shot!

It always fascinates me why the Merlins fitted to Mosquitos had only five exhaust stubs on each side for a V12 engine. Very odd.

There is a simple reason for the exhaust arrangement on a Mosquito's engines. The exhausts on the outer side of the engines used 6 stubs as expected. On the inner side if they had used 6 stubs the rear one would have exhausted onto the radiator in the wing center section leading edge. So the 2 rear stubs were combined into one and angled away from the radiator. Later marks that used the 2 stage Merlins which were longer and mounted further forward reverted to the 6 stub format. By then also most had been fitted with the exhaust covers that helped airflow over the stubs (and added a little extra thrust).

Yeah, I KNOW about the Mossie's exhausts (My Dad flew them a few times) but it's still a fascinating quirk of engineering.

The forward 'exhaust' on the 6 stub pic is actually the inside fairing of the exhaust duct housing, and I only know that as I've built a couple of models of that Mark of the Mossie.

I've been there, and sat in that very same cab! It makes UK steam locos look like Hornby models, it's THAT big!
