Vis an email chain ....

Hi, apologies for the cold email, but I stumbled across your posts on model boat mayhem, where you adapted a seven lifeboat RC toy into a “proper” council remote control boat. I wondered if you would be kind enough or able to advise me on how I can do something similar with mine? I have seen all your posts, and I think I have the basics, but if you could give me some guidance to the actual items I need to buy, such as shafts, Motors, ESU etc I’d really appreciate it.

Thanks so much in advance, and apologies again for reaching out like this.

Kindest regards,
 Gene

Hello Gene,
Are you referring to this build?

Hi Martin,

Thanks for getting back to me. Yes that’s the one! I have the model and I’ve removed the existing electrical components and motor pods, so need to get a motor, ESU, shafts, rudder/servo and TX/RX kit, so I would be extremely grateful if you could advise on what you’d suggest I get, based on your experience converting yours.

With mine I also want to put in running lights and a small motor for the radar bar which I’ll put inside the deck house ideally using the same battery, and be able to turn them off and on using the remote control, so if you’ve got any suggestions I’d really appreciate it.

Thank you so much. Any help you can give, big or small, would be massively appreciated.

Kindest regards,
Gene

Hi Gene,

Sorry about the delay in responding.... how are you getting on so far?

Most stuff can be got from: https://www.modelboatbits.com/Model-Boat-Propshaft/

Only need a small motor, eg:
https://www.componentshop.co.uk/385-dc-motor.html.html
https://www.componentshop.co.uk/385-dc-motor-6-12v-noise-attenuated-mfa.html.html

Shaft, probably an M4 shaft, you'll need to measure the length from motor to pro Minus the gap between the motor and shaft (inside the coupling) lots of dry fits with barbecue skewers or the like.
Some hints & tips here: https://www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/My_models/0%20index.htm

Props, have a look on ebay:
( Also rudders too )

Once you got motor, shaft & Battery layout sorted, you soon find where the needs to go!

Hi Martin,

I can’t thank you enough for getting back to me!
I’ve really struggled for help with this. I’ve asked for help on forums, read two RC boating books, and went to my local model boating lake, but nobody seems to be particularly keen or able to help. Your post detailing your conversion is my absolute goal which I’m trying to replicate for the most part, with some slight changes.

I am going with your single-drive system and have currently filled the old motor drive holes in the hull.

On mine though I’m going to have the deckhouse removable, and seal up the old battery cover as I want to reduce all possible leakage. I’m going to open up the middle of the deckhouse floor (see attached pic) and install a high lip to stop water getting in.

The big difference though is I want to add a set of navigation lights (3V), a rotating blue light (4-12V), and a small motor (3V?) inside the deckhouse with a shaft rising vertically out and up to the antennas and into the radar so I can simulate a rotating radar bar. (I know the shaft won’t look ideal going though the flybridge but I’m happy enough at that scale to let that go).

This is where I’m struggling though, with the power system. I know I want to run a single motor and servo for the rudder (does it matter which servo I get?), as well as the nav lights, blue light and radar bar, all of which are varying voltages, so I need to know what voltage my system is going to be, and if the accessories I have got/want to get are compatible.
And also, what battery system will work best for the additional power needed compared to your one (do I even use two batteries for the two systems?).

I want to control the nav lights+radar on one switch on my transmitter, and the blue light on another, so a 6ch system should do it. Does it particularly matter what tx/rx system I get? I’ve attached a pic of one I’m looking at, as well as pics of the other items I’m looking at.

I’m at a bit of a dead-end at the moment in terms of the RC system and electronics but that’s just because I’m not sure of voltages etc. So if you could help me out with that I’d really appreciate it!

Thank you so much for the other links you sent, especially for the ESC, which I was really struggling with which to get.

I really appreciate any guidance you could give me on this as it’s something I’ve wanted to do for so long, and a recent health problem means I’m at home a lot more and able to tinkle!

Thanks so much Martin,
Gene

Just looking at this ESC…

It give me “connection install” options - do these relate to the battery connections?
Thanks!

Yes, You can fit your own or choose one of the options and they fit it for you at the price quoted which is added to the basic price of the esc

Ok, so would you suggest I need to buy the battery first?
This is my first time doing an RC build, so knowing where to start is the problem - IE what do I buy first that will dictate everything else?

You can buy batteries with connectors to match the esc.

Ok thanks, but what I’m trying to figure out is where do I start? What do I buy first? The motor, the ESC, the servo…? Or doesn’t it matter?
I clarified earlier in the thread the additional powered items I want to use on the model, so it’s trying to figure out what I need to get, and in what order.
Thanks

I could really use some help with this if anyone could help with my electronics. I have a model just sat here, because I just can’t figure out what I need to know. If anyone could help I’d really appreciate it.
Thanks.
