What are these?
« on: March 08, 2024, 12:40:02 pm »

Hello

I have come acrossed something while researching my ship,
I shall post a link so you can hopefully view it.

On the rudder of this ship, there are white "things" jotted over the rudder and ships hull? Any ideas what these are?

Any info would be great.. Id like to add some detail to my rudder so just looking to see if this could be a feature?

Sacrificial anodes, they rot due to electrolysis rather than the hull.   %%

To add, the ship probably has a phosphor bronze prop and in salt water (indeed even in fresh water to a lesser extent) this would all react with the metal of the hull so the sacrificial anodes are added to corrode first and protect the ship. Harbours also have a lot of free electrical leaks into the water (true) which accelerates the process. Basically the different metals act like a battery with the salt water being the medium.

Whilst a fibreglass hull, my friends yacht has a couple of these to protect the propeller, shaft, bearings and hull fittings.

Cheers
