NATO Exercises
« on: March 20, 2024, 06:02:58 pm »

There is a very interesting and photo heavy report on the Navy Lookout website on operation Steadfast Defender. It does demonstrate how NATO ships can work together. Also I think the crew of HMS Prince of Wales seem to have done very well in standing in for HMS Queen Elizabeth at short notice when the latter developed a propshaft fault. PoW has not previously hosted an air wing but seems to have risen to the occasion.

If the RN (and other armed forces) was better funded then things would be a lot better but in the last budget all the Chancellor could offer was that defence spending would be increased when financial conditions permit. Has he not noticed that we seem to be heading rapidly towards WW3 if Russia isn't confronted?  >>:-( Our politicians appear to be unaware that the first duty of the Government is Defence of the Realm, not squabbling about replacing the Prime Minister.

The trouble now Colin is we would have to import foreign made steel, then build shipyards to build ships and yes train people in various trades to build them. But more importantly find the necessary people and train them to man them. Since the 1980's the political will was call centres not manufacturing and getting foreign money in to capitalise our business albeit they usually left after stripping out all the research work and selling off the assists. So where is now the skills to do what you want, we even now import ammo, and aircraft.

Some aircraft.............

The majority of the RAF's Typhoons and a large proportion of their F-35s are made here in the UK.

In fact the lift fans for ALL the VSTOL F-35Bs, even the USMC's, are made here. I installed and maintained the massive friction welder that Rolls Royce use to make them.

But our Government still do silly things like 'retiring' quite capable aircraft before even thinking about replacing them, viz the Nimrod-Poseidon and Harrier-F-35 fiascos.

" PoW has not previously hosted an air wing but seems to have risen to the occasion."

     Now that is strange, didn't expect an aircraft  carrier to be capable of doing  this?

Yes I know about 45% of a F35 is made or designed in UK, what I am trying to say this country has lost the ability or the Government has to design and build in this country. The last fighter we have is the Tempest and that was a Euro project, the last I believe designed and built here was the Lightning. The F35b is a strike plane not a dedicated fighter.

Talking of Typhoons, any one know of a replacement yet in the offering as they are now becoming a old design.

 And putting a bullet in a gun is an effective way of
   A. proving the round.
   B. ensuring the gun is capable of discharging it.

We have a program here called QI, where it is claimed that the chicken came first as it evolved from a sea mammal as it was a egg layer or was it the egg for the same reason  {:-{
