Steam Tug Mayflower
« on: July 16, 2024, 09:59:14 pm »

Today I became probably the 4th owner of this model, powered by a Cheddar Puffin. It’s a beautiful model, about 1/16th scale (maybe more like 1/15.5 !). What I’d like to know is if anyone knows who originally built it. I know it was built around 2004-5 by a chap from Bristol and that 4 fibreglass hulls were made, one of which has ended up in the USA. Does anyone know where the other 2 hulls are? My understanding is that the original builder has passed away and the boat was acquired as a result of a house clearance. The original builder did a beautiful job with a lot of litho plate being used for the deck and superstructure. It’s quite a simple boat in layout but every inch has been properly made. I’d love to know a bit about the man who built it if anyone knows.

Apparently the hull was made by a chap by the name of Phil Riley from Gloucestershire. Does that name ring any bells??

A bit of an update to this thread. A fortnight ago this boat was ready for its first sail in my ownership. The final delay had been to do with finding a suitable trolley to get it from car park a couple of hundred yards to the launching jetty but someone recommended a garden trolley with 10” pneumatic wheels - great, sorted. The a fortnight back I went down to Bournville with a 5 foot Fairmile D to run at an event. That evening and overnight I was then putting my 3 3S lipo packs onto a storage charge. Unfortunately the third lipo caught fire and it was directly below the bow of my tug. So now it’s part of an insurance claim and I intend to repair it but does anyone know of a company that can repair a party damaged boat hull? I am thinking of removing the damaged foredeck and then gradually laying up new glass matt over the damaged hull from the inside, being careful not to cause the hull to bulge outwards so just an inch or two at a time until I each the stem and then I can add further layers of mat to strengthen it before turning to the outside and repairing as best I can the damaged gel coat - in sone places I can see only may hence the need to progress slowly. If anyone has any ideas about professionals of advice for DIY then I’d be grateful to hear from you please,
Simon
