Air brushes?
« on: July 20, 2024, 04:39:10 pm »

I'm currently building a US Coast Guard 47' MLB and starting to paint it.
I have question. What are you are all using to paint these larger models 35" (1 Meter) and up: Air brushes and such ( not asking abuot rattle cans I can't get the colors I need) I'm using Vallejo paints.
I have both a ANEST IWATA LPH-80 HVLP and a Iwata eclipse HR-CS.
The  eclispe seems too small for these bigger boats.
I'm having problems learning how to use the Anest.
I just ordered a new regulator hoping I can get more reliable air flow with it.
The Anest is a HVLP gun designed for small touch up work an auto's.
Has anyone tried this on thier larger models?
What are you using???
I'm using Vallejo Metal color Duraluminium 77.702 for small areas the eclispe works fine. but not on large areas.
Thank you

Hi

your ANEST IWATA LPH-80 is a bit of a overkill in my opinion.
I'm using a  Custom Colors 130 with a 0.3mm needle and a fixed 7ml cup (It looks a bit like your Iwata eclipse HR-CS), and I just did a 1:10 RC Sd.Kfz.222-110 panzer (48cm long), also had a Custom Colors 134 which is basically is the same as the 130 but with detachable cup/glass but cannot locate at the moment  {:-{ the same for my Badger 150. (I need to clean up my workshop too many things is missing right now).

I'm using Vallejo acrylics and use a mixture of 50/50 airbrush thinner and flow improver as thinner, 4-5 times the amount of paint works for me. With the primers 1-3 to 1 primer. With Air 1-2 to 1 paint.

Bought some small PE bottles of Ali express so I can mix larger portions of paint and just top up the cup during the paint session. I always put a 4-5mm ball in the paint bottles before shaking them.

For the details I have a Custom Colours 201 without cup and 0.2mm needle, works great for small items and details.

I seal the paint with Vallejo acrylic on a spray can.
BTW Custom Colors is a rebranded Chinese airbrush. You can see pictures of them here, sorry it's in Danish https://airbrushshoppen.dk/shop/custom-colors-airbrush-691c1.html

And I use this for shaking the bottles, especially if it's an old bottle of paint.

I'm using Vallejo Metal color 77.702 Duraluminum. Vallejo recommends 4-5 parts paint to1 part flow improver. And no thinner as it is supposed to be thinned for spray painting. Flow improver they say it is used just to keep tip clear this paint dries in minutes. If I use anymore thinner with this paint it’s like spraying water.
On other Vallejo paints I’m doing your mixture and this works great in my Iwata.

I tried painting with my Iwata and it was taking for ever to cover the hull and I was spending more time filling the cup, and getting a good overlap coverage was difficult and this color is hard to see when spraying, I was getting light and darker shades. The hull is 0.995MM long.
I finally figured out how to use my LPH-80 buy increasing air pressure to 35PSI and turning flow down a whole lot. My problem now is my air flow regulator ¼ thread is not working correctly it cause the gun to send out a large blast of air about 60PSI when I squeeze the trigger then bleeds down to the 35PSI I set it al. I just ordered a new regulator.  The LPH-80 requires a ¼ inch line where the HR-CS requires a 1/8-inch line. I have a large compressor that can produce the pressure and flow that I need.
I like your input, it is great.  I can use it for my other Vallejo paints.
Vallejo acrylic in a spray can, In matte is only available in the UK

Argh can't remember all the types of Vallejo.
I only have experience with 77.707 Crome on small parts, use the recommended black primer 77.660. Used my Custom Colors 130 for that.

As I recall, the paint has to be shaken again and again during used, as it tends to split in base and metallic very quickly. So maybe it's not that good to be used for lager objects?

Carsten I wrote Vallejo on the primer for These metal colors and the recommend using Gloss black paint to give more reflection and deeper chrome, metal colors. But they don't make a gloss spray can. go figure?
