I started this model a while ago and the original plans were freebies in a 2009 April edition of Marine Modelling International.  The Magazine and plans gave me a basic structure to work from.   I found a lot more information from John Lambert's book 'Allied Coastal Forces' and MP Cocker's book 'Coastal Force Vessels of the Royal Navy From 1865'.


Where I normally build on a building board; with this one I altered my method a bit.    I usually draw out the frames and then I add on support legs, so that the frames can be screwed to the building board and supported. 


This time, I wanted to try a method which Billings and a few other Companies use; I cut out the deck first.   I then mounted the deck on 3 parallel blocks which in turn were screwed to a flat building board.


I then added the deck edge stringers and internal framework to the underneath of the deck - therefore making a rigid platform to work from.   The material I used for the deck and ribs was 4mm lite ply.  Sealed with sand n sealer before I started planking.


I added the frames/keel/stringers this when was all sanded and squared up.    I diagonally planked the hull using 8mm wide x 0.5mm thick obechi.


The glue I used is Genuine Aliphatic Resin and loads of clamps.


Then when I finished planking - I sanded and filled the hull to remove any blemishes.     


Once I was happy with this, I started planking in the opposite direction diagonally with mahogany strips 5mm wide x 0.5mm thick.


This again was glued in place with the Aliphatic glue and I used cellotape sometimes to hold the planking in place while it set.


This was all sanded nice and smoothly; and given 2 coats of Zpoxy finishing resin.


At this moment in time the hull is now sitting drying out, waiting to be wet and dried.

Hi John


Always liked the look of the Bloodhound trials vessel. Beautiful work as always, looking forward to seeing the next instalments.
I’m researching a little gunboat at the moment called Pamela/Una used on the Irrawaddy River in 1945. It’ll be nice to do some double diagonal planking again on it! Keep up the good work

Hi  I have built the Bloodhound at 1-18th scale - she is 43 inches O/L and 12 1/4 inch beam, I enlarged the plan from marine Modelling plans by Barrie  Griffin. She is scratch built from 1.5 ply, power is from 2 brushless motors and twin 3s 5000ma batteries and she is set up for tank steering, the central torpedo tube rotates through 360 degrees as per original under RC control.
She sails great and is very responsive to the rudders and tank steering and will literally spin in her own length. I cannot enclose a picture because I do not know how to but there are many photos of  her under way at the Bournville Navy Day meetings on  U Tube over the last couple of years.
Bloodhound is a great boat and causes a lot of interest when I attend model shows

Nick - there is a plan build for another RAF launch in my things-to-do list which I was going to begin.   However, just haven't the right amount of information as yet and DougG, I do have one or two photographs of your boat which I have been using for reference - pit you cannot put a few more photographs on.   Looks interesting.


So, moving on with my build, the hull has had 3 coats of Z-Poxy finishing resin, rubbed down between each coat.


I have moved on and now beginning to fit the running gear.


The prop shafts and 'P' brackets are all home made - years ago I made a little jig up for soldering the P brackets for holding them whilst soldering them.   I do only use soft solder as I do not think there is a great amount of force applied to these P brackets.


The shafts are all epoxied in with 2 part epoxy (quick set - the 5 minute stuff that takes half an hour not 5 mins to go off    - that is what you get John when you buy cheap stuff. !!!  from Poundland 


Next job, is to make the rudders; but, I have just realised I will need to go for some brass rod, as my stocks have ran out.

Trust you're using 'Ersin multi core 60/40' and not the EU Leadless brittle carp? I prefer Hard or Silver solder but the meddlers from the EU got their fingers into that one with 'Cadmium free'    (you can still find the proper stuff if you look around)

Nothing but the best - Multicore - 60/40 - tin lead alloy solder.   I managed to (shall we say) acquire a full roll before the world went mad.


As you say, that unleaded stuff, is a load of rubbish - I do have a couple of rolls of it - they live at the back of the drawer - they haven't seen light for the last 6 years at least    .


Anyway, just been making the little rudders for the model and yes they are soft soldered.


I very rarely silver solder stuff for model boats as I don't think we exert enough forces on the joints if we are 'playing' proper like with our boaties  .

hello all,


just a quick update - I have installed the rear slung rudders and made up the tee bone linkage which connects the tiller arms via ball joint fittings, to an aluminium tee shaped piece which has a slot in it, to allow it to be connected to a servo arm - pictures say a thousand words... and then I moved to installing 2 JP 400 motors.   I have been informed by a supplier that these motors are no longer being produced - shame because they are a good motor. Then, I moved on and made and assembled the lip which goes around the hatch opening.   This will, in turn, support the opening deck.


Next job I did was to mask off and spray  using Tamiya spray paints.   Colours were dark sea grey for the hull sides - semi gloss black for the bottom and for the very front of the boat - white.   Once all dry, I moved on to begin to plank the main deck.   I started by laying 2 margin planks port and starboard and then the king plank down the centre.


Working from the centre now planking one either side to keep the planks even.   Using a black biro to assimilate deck caulking.


One thing I did forget to mention is that the model is actually 1:35 scale - so - a little over 23 1/2 inches long.

Update again: 


Finished off planking the deck with lime wood 5mm x 1mm thick x 125mm long planks.    This, eventually, I am going to stain down pretty dark - as, looking at photographs it looks as though the originally boat had a canvas covered deck/which was obviously painted or even a sheet deck.  I cannot find any evidence of the deck being planked as in the drawings from John Lambert and the plans that I have.  So, will leave that for the time being in case I can find any more information.


Moving on now to the superstructure - or the one and only bridge structure.   I am making this from 0.8 mm ply and 3mm and 2mm obechi framing.

hi there, Doug, very much appreciated - a couple of pictures on this build of your model on here would be very helpful.  There is a posting somewhere which helps you download photographs onto this forum - my choice of way of doing this is resizing pictures to 'medium' moving them to the desktop on my computer and then, if you look at the bottom of where you are posting on the reply page you will see attachments and other options - click that link and that will take you to a box which will say either your desktop of your pictures and then click on the appropriate picture on your desktop - and hopefully it should download it, as long as you have resized it.
