Graupner Moonraker rebuild
« on: June 09, 2024, 04:53:18 pm »

Hello all,

Looking for some advice on a new purchase,

It’s a Graupner moonraker that hasn’t been ran for a good few years,
Centre pusher is powered by a Graupner esc, fairly simple

The outer (with reverse buckets) have microgyros with the reverse buckets plugged in, assuming that when activating astern propulsion the bucket just drops however it doesn’t want to sync up with my futuba px7r

Does anyone know if microgyros are still sold and I can get any support from them?

The set button is to precisely align the two positions of the bucket servo.

Esc neutral is fixed at 1.50 millisecond and maximum throttles at 1.85 ms, forward & 1.15 ms, reverse off the top of my head. If your transmitter can't be aligned it must be out of calibration.

If you have both escs Y-connected out of one receiver channel you may as well hook up two servos and two motors to one esc. They are very conservatively rated at 50 amp and reliably thermally protected.

If you click the globe icon to this post's left you may get a link to a download or you could screenshot the html instruction page.

Hello Mike,

Thanks for the info, I had only quickly plugged them in and the "transmitter" LED was pulsing red, that's as far as I got.

I will have a look through the instruction page, I'm pretty sure my PX7R is working fine, it runs every other ESC I have from cheap seaking 120 pro esc's to schuzle 40.160 / 40.300's.

The warning led flags an invalid signal from the receiver.
I think you have a drone oriented radio set from what I can see on Futaba's support site.
This esc needs the legacy ~50Hz frame rate that analogue servos also need. Your radio will be capable of 300Hz and switching to 50Hz.

Changed to a more basic Receiver that still worked with my Futuba and it all fired straight up.

The moonraker needs a few other bits tidying up both mechanically and cosmetically and should be ready for a maiden.

Graupner Moonraker rebuild
« Reply #8 on: June 16, 2024, 11:15:08 am »

Hello all,

I thought I would start a thread to document progress of my Moonraker rebuild, I collected her last weekend from Dunbar and she had been sat in a loft for 6 years as payment for another boat that was built.

I now have a Atlantic challenger (had since new in circa 2006-2008) Seabex one and Moonraker, still on the look out for a Tito Neri and I have all the Graupner boats I wanted as a kid.

There is a few minor things to fix and one or two major but I should be able to sort if I can source the bits.

It looks like someone has made an attempt at using some type of putty to stop any leaks and also install a bulkhead system as well as some damage structurally from being picked up in the wrong way, the roller over mast has been repaired and the aft super structure needs a repair. the mid bulkhead is totally ripped off and needs glued back down then re painted.

The bow thruster is missing its propeller, and looks fairly well sealed in with a vast amount of resin being poured in over the years probably to seal leaks, I would like to get this working however im sure tracking down a replacement won't be easy

I think first step is sourcing some spot lights that have been snapped off, building the missing front railing and trying to find a replacement trim tab cable,

one has snapped and the trim tab isn't held in place any more,

Also not a fan of the characters on deck however will probably have to respray if I remove them - this will probably be a summer project or next year as im currently a full time student studying for my master mariner license.

Any help with links to parts / build logs / own experience building it - im all ears!

Cheers, Liam

Well things got a little drastic,

jet units cut out, bulk head out and debating a carbon fibre inlay to tidy her up inside before rebuilding....

I think I counted 7 different glues / sealants used at various stages hopefully I can do it justice and do a nice install with modern glues.

the hull will go to a professional body shop for body work and spraying
