Rotating Radar Arials
« on: November 28, 2024, 10:31:40 am »

Hello Fellow Builders

Having run out of space for any more model I thought I would turn to enhancing some of the models that I have already such as working nav lights with radian controlled switch on and off - rotating radar aerials and model people on the desks.

This question is with regard to rotating radar aerials -  firstly where is the best place to buy them and how would you do it when the radar head is on a mast or the like with nothing underneath it - hard to explain, see the pictures you will then know what I mean.

Thanks

Pat

I have seen a rotating aerial with a fine diameter piano wire, not much more than a hair width.  This was being driven by an old servo with the stops cut out and the electronics disconnected using a single cell.  (1.5 volts).  The aerial should spin very freely.

Looked OK and you hardly notice the drive wire among other ropes etc.

Hi Patrick following on from our conversation this evening I have built many models over the years and installed many items in them. This was always done during the building I suppose items can be added to built models not an easy task.

On my models I use,6mm Geared Motor Precision Mini Micro Planetary Reduction Reducer Gear Motor DC3V run on 1.5 volts to give 6 RPM. On your model of the island class OPV that has been converted you could remove the existing radar and replace it with GB& motor as in the second attached pic. The wires can be run under the current platform down the mast into the superstructure.

Amazon is the first two pics

Precision microdrive looks to have stop my usual one, but the third pic is what I’d use in place. They also now do not put prices on the site you now have to request a quote.
