Bypassing the external switch on Hobbywing brushed crawler ESC?
« on: February 01, 2025, 07:54:13 am »

I have two Quicrun Crawler Brushed HW ESCs for my tug boat, and they have two external momentary-push switches. The small black one is for calibration, and the big red one is the on/off switch for the ESC. Momentary press toggles it on and off. But I don't want to use the on/off switch, and want it by-passed so the ESC is always on when the battery is connected. Opening up the switch box there is some circuitry inside. So I am reluctant to simply short out he wires. Any suggestions on how to hack it be always on?

EDIT  - I found this video which seems to answer it perfectly - anyone have any argument with it? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pV0gZdo32QI

A jumper link on the power wires, or both, would surely solve the moisture ingress issue without creating the programming hurdle.

Not sure what you are referring to w.r.t. "moisture ingress" - the boat hull or the switch casing?
I just want to have the ESCs always "on" and not need to press the momentary switch. The ESCs come with a separate programming unit so omitting the black programing button is not a problem - It is not needed.
The tug boat I am making will have a large part of the deck removable, for battery removal (3S Lipo) and drying out. I may incorporate an unobtrusive battery power switch on the deck but certainly don't want the two bulky ESC switches.

The video btw says to short the two red wires together, and also the black and white wires. He says he does it and vehicles go fine. These ESCs are mostly used for terrestrial vehicles and the switch unit often gets damaged, so others have desired to bypass it.

I took it to mean the YouTube video and particularly that he solved one issue (moisture ingress according to him) but created another!
He could have avoided the new problem  with four connections that could be shorted by two jumper links and mate with the switch box to program.

If you have limited space you can free up room & simplify connections at the same time with a dual esc.

It omits the power switch in the smaller, lower rated dual escs but you can add one yourself. You'd have to disable the mixing with a wire link or solder blob.

I already have the two ECSs, and space is not limiting. Actually a point the video seemed to neglect is there are two types of "programming": Setting the detailed ESC parameters (which I can do with the provided programming box), and throttle mid and end point calibration. The latter does seem to need the black switch. So, as you say, I think I will intercept all 4 wires so that I can insert jumpers that either short pairs together or retain the stock arrangement.
