Krick Victoria Frozen Driveshaft and What Exact Propeller.
« on: March 03, 2025, 01:40:29 pm »

I own a Krick Victoria with a Cheddar Puffin Engine,I had some troubles and shelved the Victoria for 10 years,To my surprise when steamed the engine would not run,Upon inspection I notice the Brass tube Driveshaft were frozen,I disconnected the Universal doggone and then tried the engine and it ran perfectly,Somehow the O Rings survived,Now I broke the propeller and removed, but the driveshaft is frozen in the Brass tube,I tried applying heat and oiled the driveshaft at both accessible end but it will not loosen,Can someone offer some advise on this issue.

Thank you.

Hi Rob

Just wondered whether you've managed to get the shaft out..?  I think I'd be wondering what was used to lube the shaft before it was stored..?  Then what would loosen or dissolve that lube that may have gone solid over time.  So if it were oil based I'd be making up some sort of funnel at one end of the tube, then trying something like acetone.  If there are traces of corrosion on the shaft, I'd probably try same approach but WD40 to try to saturate the bearings...  Then leave it for a while and try to coax it to turn, and get it out...

Best of luck...
David.

Seized up shafts are a headache, it all depends on what the hull is made from and what glue holds the tube in. In a wooden hull epoxied in I'd get the tube and shaft really hot with a mini blowtorch and wiggle it free. Thats ok if you can safely get the heat only where its needed, quite often you cant. What has worked for me on a restoration was to slip a silicon tube over one end, so it covers shaft and tube, then fill the tube with some penetrating oil, and prop the boat up so that gravity helps it down. After a couple of days i had a bit of movement in the shaft and after a week it came free.
Later on i got the tube out by inserting a near red hot shaft back into the tube which softened the epoxy. Great care is needed, so dont hurt yourself.
