Morrisons sell a nice little gadget for poaching you just hang it over the edge of pan of boiling water and let poach away.

Except when they burst and boil over the saucepan and all over your cooker.....

Fill the pan with warm water first to avoid this.

I'll stick to the old technology, saucepans don't answer back, although they do get a bit steamed up sometimes.....

When microwaves first came out I tried boiling an egg in one,(well the blurb said you do cook anything).....so in it goes, no water, no little pin prick

I first came across microwave ovens, they were commercial and not yet the size they are now, in 1970.  I was a computer engineer at the Bank of England and we would have an evening meal supplied for the evening shift. 
This was re-heated in an oven with a plastic timer strip inserted in a key-point and I later realised this was a microwave oven.  It made all the noises etc and we would leave the cling film seal over the meal which would expand and bubble up to improve the heating.
The (free) plated meals were whatever had been on the menu (we pre-ordered) that day and the food was very good.

Tinned mushrooms, if not covered, will decorate the inside of your microwave very efficiently in a fetching shade of brown....

Think of an air fryer as a mini fan oven, more than a fryer. Which it is really.
I have baked uncooked pasties in my air fryer. Great for heating pies too, and getting a crips crust, much better than a microwave.
Look on youtube for recipe ideas for air fryers. I have even seen people do cakes in them.

Clingfilm over the bowl. Add a lump of butter and they are very nice.

Is that why a tin of beans in microwave don't get hot, only the tin?

Never put metal in a microwave. You can get a firework display.

I initially left my mushrooms in an open bowl! Basically I think that any water/moisture in the food turns to steam with explosive results. OK for some foods but not others! Always  best to check first.

Classic example of 'If all fails, read the instructions'.

In the microwave, any meat on the bone, should also be covered as it can also explode, especially spare ribs.
I have one of those hard plastic covers that I just pop over the plate, rather than using cling film.
