Air cooled car Esc for brushless foam airboat
« on: April 08, 2025, 02:17:22 pm »

Hi there, I am planning a brushless FLORIDA EVERGLADEs style 3s powered  planing  AIRBOAT for rescue and FPV ridealong missions in depron and insulation foam and need an ESC in the 30-40 A range - Can I use car ESCs to avoid the complexity and plumbing of a water cooled ESC? or will that not dissipate enough heat in it's foam tomb? Thanks, Matt I have lots of expertise in selecting and operating brushless powertrains and props  from RC model flying, but boats are new to me! Thanks, Matt

I have built several Air Boats, I use Plasticard and use simple and non cooled ESC etc.
Making out of Depron etc will be so light, it is bound to Take Off!!.

OK thanks! What thickness plasticard do you use? and what adhesives?I could be persuaded to move from Depron it's just what I know from my OD planes.

hi there

I am sure a gent (Glyn Guest)  :-))  produced plans in model boats magazine for an air boat.  This may not be exactly what you are looking for, but, it may give you some guidance rather than stabbing in the dark about materials and propulsion.   On the other side note, what I have done to keep an ESC cool is to super glue or use epoxy to stick a piece of aluminium to the under side to dissipate the unwanted heat.   I am not off to seek the magazine which has the plans in for the air boat.

As Arnie says, I will be back.

MMI published my plans of a basic airboat built using insulation foam.  I'm away from home just now so I can't check dates but at a guess 1996/97.

Thanks, The pics in those links should be enough tbh, I am comfortable with doing the rest with my existing modelling skills developed scratch building O/D foamie aircraft.

2mm I seem to think and Being a Retired Plumber I used Pipe Cleaner for Plastic Waste Pipes,  NOT the Glue.
I made my Air Boats to fit Barbie or Ken.
