Bowman Paining Advice Needed
« on: September 10, 2025, 01:21:26 pm »

In a previous post on this forum I asked for help in identifying a pond yacht hull that I found in an antique shop. It is still not absolutely clear but people in VMYG think it is probably a 24" Bowman Aquaplane circa. 1953. If so the keel would have been painted black while the rest of the hull would have been one colour (red, blue or green). I have now stripped the paint from the hull and the keel (see photo) in preparation for painting. I am reliably informed that the hull is Obeche timber while the keel is made of steel. This raises some questions:1. I suspect I will need to use a different primer for the keel and hull. Can anyone confirm that and, if so, can they recommend primer paints that are readily available in the UK to do the job?
2. Having primed the keel and hull will I then be able to use the same type of paint for the topcoat(s) of the hull/keel. If so can anyone recommend a range of suitable paints.
3. I have also read that having painted the hull/keel it is good practice to apply some top coats of yacht varnish to seal the deck/hull/keel. Can anyone recommend a good yacht varnish to use.

If it is outside the rules of this forum for people to recommend commercial products, maybe generic names of the sorts of paints/varnishes that I need would get me started?

Please excuse my lack of experience in this are but the last model I painted was probably a plastic Airfix Spitfire in about 1965!

Hammerite for the Keel and does not need Primer or undercoat.

I read this on a Hamerite data sheet

"Toxic to aquatic organisms, may cause long-term adverse effects in the aquatic environment."

It might not be relevant for where you sail, and may just refer to it's liquid state but I thought I'd mention it anyway.

Thank you  both for your input!
As I want the keel to be black, Hammerite would seem like the perfect solution.
However, a quick Google seems to suggest that it remains toxic even in its dry state. As there is a chance that I may sail it in a pond in which aquatic organisms may exist, I should probably err on the side of caution.
I still appreciate the suggestion though!
All other suggestions welcome!

I'm starting to think about preparing the hull for priming. it is bare obeche timber (albeit some 70 years old). I think I read somewhere that it's not a good idea to put a primer straight on to the bare wood and it might be better to seal it with a coat of polyurethane first. Does anyone know if that is standard practice or would I be ok just to prime the bare timber?
