Sloopy 2 or 3 fast electric
« on: December 31, 2025, 06:44:23 pm »

I have had one of these languishing unbuilt in my cellar for over 20 years so I'm finally putting that right. I bought it from Prestwich Model Centre with a Graupner Speed 500 motor, flexi shaft, brass prop and ESC. I am thinking that I might build it as intended but I could update it with a brushless motor or even an out runner. If I did that then what would you suggest as a good combination?
As it stands, if I build it 'as bought' I need a split 7.2v NiMh battery pack. Component Shop sell a split set - 2 x 3 cells wired in series with a Tamiya plug - but the plan calls for 3 cells each side packed side by side instead of in 2 x 3 cells in a line (as per CS) so that the weight is as far back as possible. Any idea where I could get hold of such a pack??
Many thanks

When our club used to race them the sloopy 2 used to use a standard 6 cell pack. The sloopy 1 did need a split pack but I used to break down a normal pack and resolder the cells into 2 packs with the cells side by side. This fitted on either side of the shaft. We normally had the packs fitted in the center of the hull not at the back.
