How to Up-Scale a Hull
« on: November 17, 2007, 08:43:30 pm »

I have a GRP hull at 1/72 scale but I wish to build the model at 1/36 scale.

Do any forum members have any ideas on how to Up-Scale from the existing hull -
Note: This hull is not available as a kit - its a one off

I know there are plenty of experienced modellers out there.

All advice greatly appreciated - good or bad

You might not like what I say, but that doesn't mean I'm wrong.

If you only have the hull available then you would have to "take the lines off it" by taking a set of cross sectional measurements at intervals along the hull. You can use these to draw a "body plan" which can then be scaled up to the required size, either by re drawing or using a commercial enlarging facility. If you haven't done this before you are likely to find it to be a fiddly job requiring great patience and accuracy. Once you have got the body plan then the "Cavity Wall" thread mentioned by Circlip will give you some idea of where to go next. Even better, look at Bluebird's tutorial on the "Line to a Model" thread in Construction Queries which gives a wealth of information on building from plans: http://www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=6250.0

You don't say what type of hull it is, but if at at possible, it might be better to find a set of plans of a similar hull and scale those up instead.

Thanks Circlip for the lead on the post - the thought never crossed my mind.

Thanks Colin - I checked out Bluebird's tutorial - very informative - the man knows what he is talking about.
Either way it appears that large amounts of patience is required but in this instance, it will be worth the effort as there are a number of modellers that will want to build this model.

Yes your right - I did not mention the hull. It is a particular Patrol Boat of which no hull lines, plans or kit are available. Should you wish further info, send a pm.

thanks again guys
