Graupner Pollux tug
« on: November 17, 2007, 08:50:06 pm »

Ive ordered myself a Pollux tug for a winter project, its the same 1/100 scale as my battleship which is one reason i bought it and the other reason is its a tug so i can pull and push things around.

Out of interest i searched the forum to see if anyone has built it and well i havent seen anything :(
Anyone got one in dry dock or hidden away under a work bench???

Will post some pics of the build when it arrives.

for batteries, I sugest a 6xAA type pack, jay, why not build your own superstructure to make it more modern looking?
by the way how much did it cost?

Cheers for the pics Martin O0

Ive bought the kit and motor unit for under £35 from my local model store (special customer discount included) im not expecting it to be fantastic but it will do what i need it to.

Battery wise i was going to see if i could get 2 Rx packs wired in parallel but we shall see how much space i have in the hull first.

I fancy one of them, but I think I'd better get one of the four current projects finished first. One does happen to be a 1/96 long grey thing.

Come to the conclusion i want to make a Kort nozzle for my little tug, any ideas on how to go about it ???

I was thinking of using a piece of plastic pipe a little larger then the 30mm prop would this do or would it need to be tapered in any way???
will post some pics up when i find the camera

Good thinking but dont think i can make a becker rudder that small ::) Will try a bit of plastic pipe and see where that gets me.

steerable kort, round bit of pipe attached to the rudder post instead of the blade style rudder they supply.

worth a bash i think.

I was think more of a simple tube, as you say Jay, doesn't need to be tapered, your not going to win any national prises with a Pollux... well maybe, and fix a single plate rudder to the tube and turn the whole lot as the rudder!

Hi Jay,

Built the Revell 'Lucky' kit and decided to be stupid and motorise it so needed an alternative form of steering as it was hard to use the original design of rudder. I  made a Kort out of some 12mm. brass strip bent round a dowel, about 25mm. and then soldered with a thin butt strip into a Kort shape. Drilled it and again soldered a piece of thin brass rod, about 3/16" for the stock and a brass tube sleeve through the hull. The reason the nozzle is so large is that a 25mm. prop. was far too powerful and changed it to a 20mm. one but still works great.

Right as promised some pictures of the build (found the camera)

Found some plastic pipe thats got a 34mm ID which is perfect for the pollux as a kort nozzle, if i didnt know better it looks like it was supposed to come with it.

need to cut the rudder post down and epoxy it to the Kort then its good to go.

Will post more as i build, i think some paint might be on the cards next. mmmm what colours to do her in  ???

Need a bit of advice from you tug boys.

Running the pollux on the geared motor would it be able to tow?
Reason i ask is i am going to reinforce the inside of the superstructure behind the tow hook, im also going to fix the superstructure down with bolts or dowel with split pin.

looks ace  O0 cant wait to see the rest of this build  ;D really suit the little tug indeed, how is the best way to do the rudder? i was thinkin maybe to go all the way up on the deck to gain some room? or is it not cramped inside?

Finished model apart from tow hook which is under construction.

Goes rather well with the 6v 4ah SLA in her and sits rather well on the waterline too, finished pics aswell as a vid that Shipmate60 took when testing his 12foot battleship.

Vid before i painted and played with the upper works.
