Hello!  New member Ian here.


Many thanks to the moderators for sorting out the sign up to the forum (It was more than a week ago, but I missed seeing the email :embarrassed: )


I am returning to the hobby of my twenties.  Firstly, by resurrecting my old fast electric boat and then by building a more sedate boat suited to the lake of my local club (Northampton and District).  I'll try and get some photos organised soon.


No doubt there will be some questions of the collective knowledge of the forum!

I bought some plans for a 1:25 model of Turbinia a while back, it will be about 50" long.  The balsa and ply are all here and I will be ordering the expensive bits next month.  I'm currently in the process of transferring the plans to paper templates for the formers.


I have a couple of non-boat builds to complete in August and then I'll be on only this project from September.  I'll post some photos of the build in the future.

EDIT:  Just given myself a chuckle with an incorrect answer to the verification question "The sun rises in the...".  "Morning" is good but it's not correct.

Welcome, Turbinia is a fabulous boat steeped in history, at 50 inches there's loads of scope for some stunning detail, looking forward to following your build. Will you use three prop shafts and 9 propellers?

Thanks for the welcome messages.


I find Turbinia fascinating, and really want to do it justice.


I thought of recreating the 9 prop set up but I think this would put the prop shafts too steep and angle.  The real ship suffered from cavitation and I do not want to suffer related issues.  So the prop sizing is a sensible size for a model boat and not really scale.


However, the plans have the centre motor ahead of the outer motors.  I think this has been done to put the rudder in the middle.  But this means the outer props stick out of the silhouette of the boat.  So I think I will swap the motor positions and have an offset rudder.  I can fix a lack of rudder authority with differential thrust or a second rudder.


Can't wait to make a start.
