MODEL SHOPS THROUGHOUT THE WORLD
« on: November 25, 2007, 05:36:50 pm »

Hi all,

Just been trying to 'Google' model shops in Australia to see who supplies what and where they are - and I could not find anything.  Tried 'toy shops' & got a few bits and pieces, but no dedicated model shops.   I was just wondering - the Aussie lads on the Forum which model shops they use.

In the UK I think we take it for granted that we can get virtually 90% of the modelling materials that we require.

John

In another thread (websites) there was mention of Floataboat in Australia - maybe searching for that on Google would give you an idea of how they are categorised. Just a thought until they wake up 'down under'.

Yes John, Australia, as well as North America and some other places use the term Hobby Shop. I don't believe I've ever seen a Model shop around.

The first pic on Google for me was: http://www.hobbyco.com.au/ with many more listed under it.

Unfortunatly Hobby Shops in Australia dont really cater much for Boats, more your cars, Planes and Helicopters, Well that is my experience anyway. I useualy go online and try and find things that way. There are a few Hobby-one, Float a boat, Frontline hobbies.

The use of Hobby rather than Model might be a good idea when searching.  Model anywhere in the phrase or saying gives all sorts of strange websites.

I'll second what David said, most hobby / model shops here don't carry a lot of marine modelling related stock, apart from a few RTR kits. RC cars or aircraft are a different matter, perhaps it reflects the interest in the various modelling disciplines? Most large towns have Model Flying Clubs, but there are nowhere near the number of marine modelling clubs.
We are fortunate in our area, as one of our members runs a model supply business from his home, and he can provide us with many items at a good price. The North Coast Hobby Centre in Lismore, about 30 minutes from us, also carry a small range of suitable products, and is one of the cheapest places in Australia to buy Futaba radio gear. As I have mentioned in previous posts, Float a boat in Melbourne is outstanding for marine modellers.

John,

Adrian and Rhonda Brewer.   www.floataboat.com.au

Truly an excellent establishment - Adrian's speciality lies with yachts, but I have spoken to him on a number of occasions re advise and has been ever so willing to help. Able to download their catalogues - free

Also try R2 Model Marine    www.r2modelmarine.com
Have to pay for their catalogue but have an extensive range of everything - especially kits.

Hope this helps

Couple more in Western Australia:
Radio Model Supplies:   www.radiomodels.com.au
Very little in the store, but a lot on their website.

Stanbridges:  www.stanbridges.com.au
Good range for many hobby disciplines, but little for RC boats. Better for the wooden static kits and plastic kits than most stores i have visited.

John,

I think this is what you have been looking for. Marine Timbers.

Checkout their website  www.marinetimbers.com.au

They also supply "Cortech Balsa-cored Plywood"
