Voltage Query...
« on: November 26, 2007, 06:15:18 pm »

        ...Hi Guys...

Can anyone tell me how to find out what voltage a motor is...

I have a couple of Marx "Perm" Motors but they dont state what voltage they are...

Is there a simple test i can carry out without blowing them up...My knowledge of electrics is somewhat dangerous...

           ...Best Regards...Norry...

The easiest way is just to start with a low voltage, say 3 and see how it spins, then add another cell, then another until it sounds like its really going for it.  Then repeat the performance with a prop and shaft connected, with the prop in water to give a load.  Do the second part where you dont mind the surroundings getting a bit wet.
If you can involve an ammeter to gauge the current, so much the better.

Norry,
The Deccaperm runs at about 2750 rpm at the gearbox outlet (2.75:1 I think).
Is the Hectoperm geared too with a single gear ratio, should be about the same.

Use an ammeter or test meter to measure the no load current and check against the specifications on this site:

Norry,
If you connect up the motor to 6 volts and it spins at 2750 rpm it is a 6 volt motor, if it spins at about half that rate it is a 12 volt motor.
To my knowledge these motors were only produced in 6 or 12 volt variants, so if 6 volts is too slow it has to be a 12 volt motor.
