L A Class Seawolf Sub
« on: June 22, 2006, 03:04:32 pm »

Hi All,

I don't know if anyone is interested in this build as I have never posted anything like this before so please let me know if you want to see more of what and how I am trying to put this model together, as you will see in the first pick I managed to get the box open with out breaking anything, which for me is a good start.
The kit is suprisingly simple as it is really only a static model which I intend to fit a static diving system into.

I then started by removing all the parts and cleaning them up and storing them in their order, first off I joined the nose section and built the conning tower and attached it then built the tail section but you don't attach it yet. the next step was joining all the control surfaces, the diving vanes at the rear are cut along the hinge line so that you can make the vanes move up and down, small peices of tube are cemented into the tail cone where I have drilled holes to allow the tube insertion.  Then the vanes are drilled and a rod is installed with a collet on each one join by a small shaped peice of  brass wire I will attach a pic so you can see what I am talking about.

great insight into how to build a sub, do you mind if I ask what kit is it you are building?
Look forward to the rest of the build.

Definately keep this coming as i've got a Seawolf SSN kit that has been converted into a static dive sub by a lot of people over the pond in the USA and I want to see how you get on so I know how to start off my own one !!

The kit is a Trumpeter 1/144 scale USS SSN-21 Seawolf? NOT the Dallas I know I must have read the label without my glass's on blind as a bat.
The next sequence will be posted later today when I have caughgt up with the camera..

Well I have now started on the WTC and it seems to be pretty straight forward, the onlu thing I find a bit strange is? the WTC is three seperate compartments which are glued together to make one long WTC, but the four central end caps are drilled through so that wires and tubes can pass from one compartment to the other, as you can gather three compartments become one air chamber, the following pics show the motor attached to the rear most cap with the push rod seals in place, the motor is actually embedded in the end cap, the next pic shows the inner two caps with the pump installed I extended the mounting bracket to position the pump in the centre of this WTC section, and finally as all these were setting I painted the top half of the sub black and yes I like the swirl pattern and it will be coated with clear flat or semi gloss have not decided which yet..

Looking good so far.

What make and where did you source your WTC and the gear for it??
I'm thinking of the motor , pump , ESC , etc.

Davie ( definately determined to do this same conversion to my own Seawolf now )

The WTC is one of David Welch Type, and the motor is a GWS used normally for a park flyer as they are light weight, light on power usage and the most important cheap, the esc  will be using is an RCE 50amp made for boats and subs as it is water proof, and I am also using three mini servos to save room, I will be using a small 6v gel cell as a power pack...

Well today the first pic will show the WTC as it will go together, it looked very long when I first put all the peices together, too long for the hull I thought, but once it was all there it fitted into the hull with room to spare, having now fitted all the servos inplace and connected all the wiring, I than placed the pump switch in and the tubing to the pump and the release valve, all that was left was the battery and seal the entire unit..

In the third pic I have added the ballast bag and the plastic ring that not only limits the bag expansion but also has a captured nut to aid in the holding down of the top hull section...

Wow, you work fast Roy! Coming along nicely. Replace the Subtech seals with the nitrile orings as the subtech ones can leak under vacuum

These guys http://www.hannants.co.uk/ are a good source for SeaWolf's in the UK.

Colin,

It is a Trumpeter kit and I presume available in GB as this one actually came from here yes that is right, I bought it from mayhem forum, The WTC is from Dave Welch the motor is GWS park flyer and most of the other stuff any modeller or model shop would have...

Nice model, did you mean the Trumpeter 1/144 scale as I can't find a 1/44?

Just curious

Mankster,

Thanks for the tip I will do that as soon as I get a chance, there is enough that can go wrong without looking for trouble, as you can gather it seems to be going together very easily and so far everything has just fell into place, I will be back at it in the next couple of days as I have been to busy trying to finish of the Type XX! U-Boat at the same time..

My apologies Daryl I just scrolled up the thread and found the misleading infromation that some dummy typed in (I wonder who) and corrected it, so it now reads as you thought 1/144 not 1/44 God that would need four blokes to lift it and a very big bath to float it in,,

I have moved a little bit further on and painted the entire hull, applied the transfers and then sealed with a coat of semi-gloss clear, pics will follow shortly. Also if anyone else is going to build this type of boat, I have five pages of text on the build and a cd, which I will copy for anyone showing how to go about it, with it and the printed section you will not need anything else as it is pretty comprehensive,? all you have to do is ask..
