Admirals Barge
« on: December 07, 2007, 04:58:29 PM »

Someone will know this.

Is an Admirals barge steered by a tiller, or a wheel? (or maybe either depending on the barge, say 1970)

As far as I know all Admirals Barges were wheel steered from a forward cockpit, not too dissimilar to the Royal Barge carried on the Britannia.
Only motor whalers and the like were tiller steered.  Can't off hand remember the official name of the cup type rudder that whalers used to give both directional control (ahead/astern) and also steering.  (I'm sure it'll come to me as soon as I log off!!)

Kitchen Rudder it is, named after the inventor, and sometimes incorrectly referred to as Kitchener Gear (that's what my CO in Sea Cadets told us it was called on our motor pinnace)
