Well, I thought about it but I seem to have read somewhere that most pumps weren't designed to run continuous and they have a tendancy to burn out? Perhaps it would depend on the pump motor.  Toesup and a few others used a rather nice diaphram pump but the source dried up, unfortunately.

Hi,

Been getting the superstructure done, and tried a bit of weathering for the first time. What do you experts think? Too much? Too little? or just c!!!.

Just looking at your very smart superstructure, how tall is it? The wood I have ready seems too small.

Andy,

Dimensions are 200mm for-aft, 120mm p-s, and 130mm to top of funnel.

I dimensioned this at very approximately 1:50 scale.

Hello all, don't  you just love it when someone comes along and shows you up BIG time. With our attempts at realism looking purely amature even with hundreds of hours spent on them. While Boatmadmans looks fantastic!  Ian, keep taking the tablets they must be the things sgiving you inspiration and patience for the attention to details  ;D O0

cheers

Some more progress at last.

Hull and superstructure painting and weathering done - just needs some varnish tomorrow to stop the rust washing off ;D

No hardware fitted yet, hopefully by the end of the week so I can load test the motors in the test tank then order an ESC to suit.

tank test done, each motor pulls less than 7 amps, so now its time for action with a speedcontroller.  O0

Hi,
Well, quite a lot of fettling going on since last post. I ordered an esc from Action, arrived with the usual very speedy service (<24hrs). Wired it up and it wouldnt drive the two motors.

After testing and eliminating all other possibilities, I had to contact Dave who put me right straight away.

It was MY fault! Doh! In my ignorance I had bought 2 x 777 motors, which on having listened to advice aren't what I thought I was buying.

So, Dave very kindly made up an esc specially for me, tested it on two of his stock 540 motors, and sent it off as a direct swap for the origional esc. This was done delivered and arrived in 3 days - good service or what?

Bench tested myself - all ok.

Installed and tested - all ok.

test tank test - fuses blew!!!

I have wired a 10amp fuse between the esc and each motor, so that if one pops out on the water, the other should be able to drive me home, at the same time, the 20a rated esc cannot ever see more than 20a this way, so is protected.

measured the current on load at 9.5 amps on each motor, decided to drop the voltage from 8.4 to 7.2. Current now 7.5 amps on each motor - happy with that.

Only trouble is, those two 50mm korts damn near made the thing jump out of the bath!

Looks like fun ahead  O0 ;D

Yup, lesson learnt. Thing is though I have other motors by that seller in other boats, but they are on electronize esc's and seem to be fine.

I think the main problem is he has only test benched his motors and not used them
in a real situation. I bought buhler motors off him as he told me they were what I
needed for a 7Ft destroyer even at 24v the were not fast enough one of the
club members worked out it was going at a scale speed of 12Knots the real one
would of done 30+knots. I had also bought some 777's and 555's put the 777's
in at 6V (he had told us they did not perform properly at 6v) went like a rocket
and no issues of what he had warned of.
The point I think is that his motors are very good but his advice on their application
is of no use. It is best to buy what others recommend not on his recommendations or
trial and error

I've two of his 777s running through Graupner Scottels on my Nangee (type). They are fused at 10amps, (never blown) with Mtronics 15amp ESCs....
No problems

I think the difficulty I had was because I was trying to run 2 777's through one esc. I suspect that if they had an esc each they may have worked ok.

I was being tight trying to use 1 esc for 2 motors!  ;D

And then Alan P turned up with his mega super sspringer - 12v drive, 50mm prop - popped a 10a fuse first attempt, upped to 15a and went well.

Boy racer I am not, but I must admit that I felt like a kid again doing battle with Ian's springer  :)

The motor is out of a 24v battery drill, wonder how fast it would go if I could get the 24volts into it

Did well to get that shot Ian considering how fast it was going    {-)
