Hi Michael,
Welcome to the Mayhem!

I also have a Smit Nederland kit to build so I was going to ask you what motors to use!!!
Just joking... badly!

Motors:
I would suggest you use "low revving" 540, 550, 600 sized motors on direct drive. Motors like:
Mobile Marine Models - T4A  - http://www.mobilemarinemodels.com/acatalog/Motors.html
Deans Marine  - KONDOR 11  www.deansmarine.com
MFA  - RE- 540/1 - (3 POLE) - http://www.mfacomodrills.com/motors/540-1.html
Action Sun 540, 550 or 545 - www.action-electronics.co.uk/

Shafts:
I think prop shafts come in the kit so you should be OK unless they have plastic bearing in
which case I would recommend replacing them with all metal shafts.

Couplings:
You will need motor couplings too (universal joints), your local model shop might have them
or you can order them from online shops such as www.westbourne-models.com
www.pandanmodelboats.co.uk www.cheshiremodels.co.uk or www.cornwallmodelboats.co.uk

Speed controllers:
For motor control control you can either use 1 or 2 Electronic speed controllers, I would
recommend 2 as this gives you independent motor control and use can make the boat spin
on the spot and move sideway and clever looking stuff like that!
With 2 speed controllers and 2 channel radio, you will need a "rudder mixer" or Vee tail mixer
( as used in model planes ).
If using 3 channel radio, you can do all the clever stuff on the transmitter and you won't need a
mixer in the boat. www.action-electronics.co.uk/  www.mtroniks.net/  http://www.astecmodels.co.uk/amix.htm
sell mixers or you can build your own!   http://www.kleefeld.freeserve.co.uk/model/barry/pic01/rc_mixer.htm

Voltages:
I would recommend a 12volt setup. !2v gives you more flexibility with motor selection, lighting, smoke units,
sound and other auxiliary functions you may wish to fit.

The Smit Nederland is still a very popular kit and there is quite a bit about on the Model Boat Mayhem Forum:

As all of this is quite subjective and next week I would probably give you a completely different set of answers,
I'll post this on the forum for the real experts to add their comment and corrections!!!

...over to you lads!
