Rattle-can Varnish
« on: January 04, 2008, 12:50:23 am »

Anyone know if there is a rattle-can matt or satin varnish/lacquer available?

Thanks

Rick
I've heard good things about Games Workshop's acrylic spray lacquer, which I think comes in Matt and Gloss - although the Matt is quite glossy. On the basis of my experience you should avoid Polykote, as it yellows very quickly. It's also incredibly sticky and will foul up the floor of your workshop for days while it dries!
Personally I use a cheapo Badger 250 "airbrush" to apply Humbrol Clear Cote Satin. An airbrush needn't be expensive or elaborate for such simple jobs, and it opens up your choice of paints enormously. A compressor seems expensive but, by the time you've bought a few rattle cans or those exorbitant cans of fresh air, you'll have spent as much and have nowt left to show for it except empty cans!
Works for me.

Hi Rick
This is just one of the varnishes sold by this company.
They are a very efficient concern and their service is excellent.  O0

Thanks guys, useful advice - as always.

FLJ: I've had an airbrush for two years - it was a present and it's still in its box! The thing that puts me off using it is cleaning it afterwards, as I'm the world's untidiest modeller. Any tips for easy airbrush care? And what would use to thin the Clear Cote

Rick

Humbrol paint data sheet advises Humbrol enamel thinners for airbrushing

Clean airbrush by flushing with thinners, I always allow 10 15 seconds on a wide spray.

Go http://www.flairmodels.co.uk/Finishing/Paintframes.htm for Spectrum matt lacquer in rattle cans. The button cleaner is also a very good investment.

Airbrush care is dead easy . All depends on what you have put through it.
For water based acrylics wash out the pot with warm soapy water and spray untill empty . For other paint types do the same using the thinners for whatever paint you used.
I also periodically strip the thing down (Iwata TR2 ) and clean the whole thing with cellulose thinners .

Its easy to clean one  O0

Now then using one is another question entirely  {-)

A pic of my newly painted Baja 1/5 scale car , airbrushed from the inside of the shell . Sound easy ? You try masking up backwards !  {-) {-)

I should imaging any contortionist standing on their head with their hands behind their back would find it a doddle   {-) {-) {-)

Paint job looks good to me

I tried the various thinners - white spirit or whatever, but then bought a can of Airbrush Cleaner and find it excellent. May seem expensive, but you only need a little to get rid of everything. Haven't tried it with acrylic, but believe it works on that as well as enamels.

Im ok with enamels through my airbrush, but acylics scare the life out of me!
I was always worried about the paint drying in the jet, enamels etc dry slowly and can be cleaned by back-blowing easily enough, any ideas or thoughts on this?

BP
Meth spirits -
I use it all the time for thinning acrylics 50/50 mix
and for cleaning my airbrush after them.

If you remember my multi coloured destroyer escort
I mad a huge mistake never realised till the next day
the meths just soaked in to the acrylic paint and it wiped off.

You have nothing to fear with Acrylics, if you thin them properly , I spray 2.1 meter models from end to end with several coats and it has never dried in the spray gun for me.  O0
