Speed 600 motors
« on: January 06, 2008, 10:18:33 pm »

Evening all. I have a new Graupner speed 600 that has a metal sleeve around its body-what is its purpose as its not magnetic and does not hold any other components in place?? Its easily removed by springing open and sliding off. Anyone got and ideas of its true purpose? and can i do away with it?

Hi Trent Driver,
These rings are called Torque Rings.
Their purpose is to increase the torque of the motor by ensuring the magnetic field stays around the armature to put simply.

Hi Bob
Thanks for the info,do you think I would notice a difference if i removed it? reason-to save weight in a light model.

If the weight of a flux ring is that significant then you've got more serious problems elsewhere, or you're worrying far too much. I doubt if one of those weighs as much as 25 gm. A bit more info about the model and the exact type of Speed 600 might be useful.

Not a good analogy, but removing the cylinder head from an I/C engine will lighten it.  It will not improve performance.
If an electric motor was designed with a flux ring, it was there for a purpose, and removing it will not help.  It might not be magnetic, but when the motor is running, it will have an effect on the magnetic performance.

I have a Mtronic Vision 600 motor where they call this ring a slip ring. The instructions say to leave it on for more torque and remove it for more speed.  :-\

I was about to post the same reply as DickyD.

I will add that a member at our club did a quick experiment with the club 500 motor.

With the slip Ring removed, there was a slight increase in revs but also an increase in amps drawn.

So if you remove the ring you will get a lighter quicker boat (in theory) but a shorter run time.

They sell them as after market fittings in USA :-

Stator rings increase motor running time.

Small Stator Ring and Mounts fit SPEED 400, Mabuchi 380S and motors of 1-3/32” diameter (28mm). Larger ones fit SPEED 500/600, Mabuchi 540/550 and motors of 1-3/8” diameter (35.5mm). Stator Rings lower RPM, current flow to increase duration.
GR1794/1 Stator Ring for SPEED 400 ..... $ 5.60
