The one that is used or over used today is "At the end of the day" usually by sports persons with limited vocabulary. There is a show in Australia that is all about Rugby League and one player who had obviously been in to many scrums said it in every sentence over a 5 minute segment.

or  Laugh about that then,, another clip...as if I dare.    or Here in Wales,,  WHO`S COAT IS THAT JACKET?. Or, I`ll be there now, in a minuit.

"Cheap at half the price" - well, it would be, wouldn't it?

Best one - my Dad clipping me (gently) on the head when he walked - "That's for nothing - wait till you do something!" I never understood that. Mind you, I never did something either!!!

The worst of it is, with children aged 18, 10 and 6...I'm finding myself slipping into "in my day..."  :embarrassed:

I have just realised that I have started turning into my Dad. I can recall being a kid and Dad would always have the ABC (Australia's BBC) on the car radio, with all the news, we kids would always nag to put on a station with the latest music. I have just noticed that I have the same station on in the car all the time. When did that happen????????????????????????

Another one of Dads.... " He was like a dog in a manger"!

This never made sense to me either, but I read a kids book of fables a few months ago and it is from an old fable, maybe one of Aesop's.

The only food in the barn was straw in the manger. The dog couldn't eat the straw, but being spitful and angry he growled and snapped and stopped all the other animals eating as well.

So a bit like begrudging others something you can't have. Or spoilling other enjoyment of something you don't want because you can't get what you want.

Hi all, I like Tigertigers explanation of 'Dog in a manger'. I sort of understood what it was but never quite got what it was about before. The one really non pc expression I ever heard was ' Nigger in the woodpile' When describing one wrong thing among many. I wonder why it is no longer used? Also not used any more is 'Can I have a ...' now transformed into 'Gimme a .. Graham  :)

Tiger, I think you are right about the 'dog in a manger' thing, Mum used to read Aesop's Fables to us and you just triggered a memory with that.... I obviously wasn't paying attention... as usual.
The politicians wern't short of using fashionable words... remember 'cloud cuckoo land' and 'gerrymandering'!
In the 70s the expression 'Far out man' was pretty prevailant too... usually uttered by hippie types wearing loons and long hair.
I think today, whole sentances of tripe are generally uttered, epecially on programmes like Jeremy Kyle and I really hate it, when asked a question the moronic respondants usually come away with the following...
:P"Well, basically, at the end of the day,  like, man, nuttamean innit. that is basically a no-brainer and you need to cool man , nuttamean!!   :P
(remember, each of these words is interspersed with expletives otherwise the meaning of the sentance would be lost on the other morons)!
I swear blind the expression 'nuttamean' will find it's way into the dictionary as a word in its own right one of these days.

On the subject of words which finish up being meaningless through careless useage, do you remember when the only people who "delivered" things were the milkman, the postman and the midwife? I heard a spokeman from Virgin Rail on the radio the other day who kept going on about "delivering" railway journeys. Whatever next?

Another one guaranteed to annoy is "roll out" (it used to apply just to new aeroplanes, pastry, barrels and red carpets)........

...and then there's the trend to refer to intangible things like an insurance policy or a bank account as  "products". Pretentious or what?

Back on topic, when did folk stop being "gutted" or "sick as a parrot"? These days I'm like becoming so devastated - jer naahmean?

FLJ, 'sick as a parrot'...never understood that one! Do parrots have a special kind of sickness which gives rise this expression? As many phrases like this have their roots in our Naval past, I suggest it could possibly have been started by sailors bringing parrots home from abroad and if the birds became  ill, they would usually 'keel over' or to put it another way... become ex parrots!

These two seem to crop up in an engineering environment more than any where else
"Just a tad" or "Just a gnats" I have no idea how much they are or what they are but I do know if I am doing a job with another engineer we seem to know just how much to move, tap or adjust the object we are talking about.

Here's one which I haven't heard for years.... it's that musical taunt which kids used drone out... "Nah- nah- nah- nah- nah"! This is one I never understood nor can I begin to surmise as to how it could have ever begun, its a weird one for sure but its utterance could often lead to a punch up in the playground. :D

::)  Some of the Welsh Valleys  'Stop starting now'.  'Jump up never come down'.  'He's round the twist'.   'I'll lump you with a two by four in a minute'.  and my favourite,  'Drop your load for you mister?'  (This referred to putting a miners coal delivery into the coal shed for him, for which you would usually got 'half a dollar' which if you didn't know was a half crown coin worth 2shillings and sixpence, or 12and a half pence in todays toy money.   Harry

One I remember, that my mother used to say when we were eating bread, was, "Eat your crusts, it will make your hair curly". That was a long time ago, you ought to see me now!

Don't know about `just a tad` but `just a gnats` is not complete.

It should read `just a gnats testicle` or another cruder form and they must be pretty small.

What is a ruddy 'Tad' anyway?

Its roughly equivalent to a smidgin I reckon.... although come to think of it, shouldn't it be a wee tad - or is that a smaller quantity than a tad??  ::)

Hmmm.. perhaps a 'tadette' which I have heard used occasionally might be a young female type of tad. Why do expensive things cost 'an arm and a leg' and why are things done awkwardly referred to as 'kak handed' and whatever happened to 'stone the ruddy crows'....and why the poor crows?? Anyone remember the expression 'Bloody Nora' or am  the only one left using it these days?

With the demise of Trams and latterly bus conductors, 'cumoangitaff' can no longer be heard as an encouragement to speedily leave the vehicle!

Likewise 'Under 60 doonstairs - awrarest upstairs' has vanished from the vocabulary and, whilst it wasn't a spoken instruction, the two wee dings on the last tram that instructed the driver to slam on the brakes, thereby freeing up more standing room.

Aah, gone are the days!!
