I have always known it as a "gnats t****r" which is 2 tenths of a thou, do not ask me how I know this. There is a guy where I work who's number plate ends in TAD, so we say a TAD is the size of a Vauxhall Corsa.

Then there is "A poofteenth" another measurement or "Justa Bees Dick" and if you get it right it will be "The ducks nuts". When I was a kid, for a while I lived in Malta and the school kids would use an expression when you made a mistake "Shame, shame, pappa shame all the donkeys know your name" I can only think that the pappa in that saying was the pope as it was a heavily catholic country. I recall late 60s early 70s everyone greeted and said goodbye with "Cao" (Chow) thank good that never lasted. "Fairdinkum" "You Beaut" "Rippa" or "Rippa tune" or the king of that one "Rippa tune Charlie" or the best Australianism "G'day". Oh and then there is "Strike me flamein handsome" and if you are extremely thursty you are "Dry as a dead dingos donnger".

Ian M, I grew up in Scotland and as a kid I well remember "c'mon git aff" The bus conductresses were agressive, usually fairly young but slightly overweight with big knockers and fat bums. One of the tricks some kids used to get up to was to pull the tab at the bottom of the used ticket box on the rear platform and watch as the bus produced a stream of tickets as it accelerated away from the stop. The tirade unleashed from the conductress was usually "Ya wee bast..ds. ah know yoor faces, yooz jest wait"! I also remember the top decks being full of miners, covered in coal dust and filling the upper deck with so much fag smoke you could neither see nor breath. Your post brought it all back to me... cheers.
Ps I also remember the friday night drunks, in true Billy Connely style, with bottle of whiskey in the overcoat pocket standing up at the front of the bus and addressing his fellow travellers, quoating those immortal words "Is it a song yeez are wantin.. naw... well f..k the lot o yez well" :D and finishing of by falling down and passing out in the walkway between the seats. :P

Hmmm.. why are things done awkwardly referred to as 'kak handed' ...

I read this somewhere, and it is from memory so is not 100% accurate but the gist of it is.

In ancient times you used your right hand for eating and other things. and your left hand for wipping your a55. So your left hand was your 'kak' hand. I think the Greek for pooh is Kaka.

Also in the past, left handed people were presumed to be clumsy. Probably because they were trying to do everything right handed (the church has a lot to answer for)

So clumsy was 'kak handed'.

As an aside, my sister used to be rapped across the knuckles with a cane by the nuns, for writing with her left hand.

Tiger, that 'kak handed' description sounds very logical... don't know why it didn't occur to me but I think my brain is fogged by this ruddy flu which has afflicted me!
As for the nuns, those God fearing angels of mercy, whenever I hear the name mentioned I can't help thinking of the tv programme 'Father Ted' and the reaction of the character 'Father Jack' when confronted by them. If youv'e never seen the programme, this statement will be lost on you but it always makes me laugh just to think about it. {-)
Sorry if I've drifted off the thread a little here.

His bones will never go brown.
He has long pockets and short arms.

I know the feeling Tigertiger, I was forced to write right handed by my school and also by my mum and dad, the hours and hours of right hand writing practice I had to endure!!!!!!!!!!

Still 3 of the most talented people in the whole world I know of are "lefties" and they are; ME, MY WIFE AND MY DAUGHTER!!!!!!!!

I am intrigued about that Mark. I am unsure that being lefthanded is an hereditary trait. However I once saw a documentary about Lefthandedness and it was found out that a higher perportion of lefthanded people when taking up a sport or hobby would be better or more likely to succeed than their right handed counterparts.

Hi David, it is not hereditary in my family or my wifes family, all of both the immediate families are all right handed. As for Hannah when she was very small we noticed she would favour her left hand, so if she wanted to draw anything we would make a point of not putting the crayon or pencil in her hand, but place it in front of her to see which hand she picked it up with and it was always with her left.
They do say lefties are more creative as well.
So ther is hope for me yet!!!!!!!!!

I may be old fashioned (or just old) but I still use many of the expressions mentioned in previous posts, such as , "six of one and half a dozen of the other", "stone the crows" and "cheap at half the price" etc.

Some typically Australian expressions are "as mad as a cut snake", and "as strong as a mallee bull".

David, I think the correct expression is "Ripper tune Boris" which came from a cigarette TV advertisement featuring Paul Hogan back in the 70s or 80s.

Another expression meaning very small was "a fifth of a fairy's fart". I don't know if that was of Aussie origin, but it was in common usage a few years ago.

It is probable that left-handers do well at sports requiring use of the hands because they practice most of the time against right-handers, and so do the right-handers as well, so a right-hander has an extra problem when dealing with a left-hander.
I don't think that runners and throwers show any advantage either way.

Don't know about left or right handed being better. But if you have watched Rocket Ronnie playing snooker he as a decided advantage. He plays equally well with either hand.

Just to follow up on the Gnats/Tads debate:

Of course both of these are terms used for a rough estimate. For real accuracy we tend to use a midges.........

Sorry me ducks, but the north Notts version of that would be 'Well, I'll gut t' our 'ouse!' - my Gran's favourite saying when she was surprised by anything - roughly translated.... well I will go to my house!  Exactly what is meant to be implied by that though, I haven't the foggiest idea! ;)

People who seemed unable to pronounce the word' crisps'.... often used to hear them say 'A packet of crisss'!
The word 'scullery' doesn't seem to be in vogue anymore.
'Bottle of milk' is becoming rarely used as a term although people still refer to the metric cartons as a 'pint of milk'
Women used to refer to daily shopping as the 'groceries'

Does anyone call the police 'The filth' anymore?
The latest expression for 'please may I have' is rapidly being replaced by 'can I get' (yuk)!
Rarely heard when holding open a door for young people....'thanks'
Never heard on a crowded  bus anymore...'excuse me madam but would you care to sit here'.
One you definately won't hear shouted out anymore is "look out.... a f...k..g Doodlebug"!!!! ;D

My Grandmother used to say 'sling your hook' which meant go away,
no idea where that came from.

Here is one my Mother used, particularly when being pestered by us kids asking "What is that you are doing?"

"I'm setting layho's to catch meddlers"

I had no idea what it meant 50 years ago and I still don't.

I don't care though, because "I give as good as I get" (Ihave a go back at them)
