I guess it is a feature of age and/or geography.

My recollections include:

"A yu any on yu" or "Do you have any cigarettes about your person". This from when I lived in Nottingham and presumably        arose   from the dominance of cigarette making there.

"A wimwam for a goose's bridle" or "Don't be so damn rude, asking what I have got here".

"The roofs are ketching up" or " The slates are drying so the rain must have stopped", courtesy of my late (Devonian) mother.

"Drat your eyes" or "Confound you".

"The boss is a nice man" Not heard after I became "the boss"!

One I remember as a kid. "He who smelt it dwelt it" and "He who denied it supplied it" also relating to the fart.

One of my fathers favorites.

Rules and regulations are for the guidance of wise men and the obedience of fools.

Rules and regulations are for the guidance of wise men and the obedience of fools.

Try telling that to the National Audit Office  (unless of course you are a Govrnment Minister)  >>:-(

Haven't heard this one in years, Aberdeen Booster

Knock the old truck out of gear and freewheel down the hill.

Trucks were governed at 40m.p.h. in those days and they could gain more freewheelling.

Silent sixth (gear)

I knew a guy who did this with a Leyland Hippo, having found on of the few hills in Holland. Towards the bottom of a hill there is a bend. I can't remember the story exactly but the Hippo eitehr had power assisted steering, or brakes. Either way, with no assistance from the engine he drove through the front of a shop.

Those old trucks didn't have power assisted brakes or power steering on those days.

I think they had vacuum type brakes unlike the modern air brakes.

We were taught to use our gears in those days to assist in slowing down or keeping it from running away.

I Always remember at Shap the old road before the M6 was built.. You were prompted by signpost to use low gear before you starting down the big hills.

So you can see how dangerous The Aberdeen Booster was

Yes, and Shap can be dangerous going UP as well.

Many years ago, in the early morning I was towing my caravan north up Shap. In front of me there was just one very large, multi axled lorry. I approached it carefully wanting to preserve my momentum as I passed when suddenly the lorry started weaving very badly. I sounded my horn and the vehicle straightened up. As I eventually passed the lorry a sheepish looking driver waved "Sorry" at me. I guess he had dropped asleep as his vehicle ground up the hill, dropping down gears and making a monotonous noise.

Both he and I were glad there was not another vehicle in sight as he had room to weave and I had room to manoeuvre!

Ahh Shap!  I recall many years ago heading south, a bit past Shap village, seeing a sports 2CV (must have been the sports version - it had roller skates tied to the door handles for extra stability) that was filled with students and going amazingly fast (for a 2CV).  They must have been students because nothing else is that scrawny and unkempt.  And you cant persuade anything else to pack so many into the back seat of a 2CV.  And open the lid.  And all being stood up, much like cress in a supermarket punnet, waving in the wind of their passage.  So to speak.
Never thought of the A6 as memory lane.

The A6

Nose to tail in the hail, as we use to say

First time down the Shap. I was a van boy (driver's mate nowadays) and remember my driver with fear on his face and the hand brake held on all the way down the old truck (Commer) screeming it's head off in low gear

Anyway another word(s) you don't hear nowadays is ..Pay Raise.

Another, Lum which is chimney in Scotland.
