Linking gell cell batteries together
« on: January 11, 2008, 02:10:31 pm »

I am shortly starting on the Bangarth tug and intend to put 2 x 12v gell cell batteries in her.

This will go a long way to giving the required ballast but my question is, if I have the batteries linked in parallel I will still have 12volts?

With this set up will I get more "on water time" and will I ahve sufficient still to run lights etc?

If I swapped the link to series making 24 v would this help in towing?

I know they sound like dumb questions but there is a reason for that - I am O0

Two like gel cells in parallel will double the run time.
The same in series will double the voltage and give you the more speed. O0

Thanks DickyD,

I think I will use parallel for regattas then and swap to series for towing.

Thanks again

If you use 24 volts, the batteries in series, make sure your ESC and motor can handle 24v ;)

hi billy what size is your hull, prop and motor as you don't really need to goto 24v if you get the right prop, motor combination. i am getting 12 pounds of bollard pull from 2x 70mm thruster props in Kort's being turned by Astra fan motors and believe me it is a bit on the powerfull side

If you fit lights, don't go to 24 volts unless you intend to do something subtle with the wiring, or have a separate battery for the lighting.
