Welcome to the Forum Bill,

There are literaly hundreds of differing types, sizes and levels of models available that we could do with a little more information.

Do you fancy a static model, period ship, modern working boat, war ship, sailing ship etc etc and do you want it radio controlled, steam powered, electric power or IC power. I think that covers most (deliberately left subs out). The more info you can give us the better the advise you will get coming back and believe me when I say you have picked the best place to be for good advise.

All the very best,

Barry

I always suggest looking at Model Slipway - a big range of models, good instructions and great backup if you run into problems. I started with their Rescue Boat and have since built a number of their models.

Hi Bill I would suggest you look at Model Slipways web site which is very comprehensive and explains everything you will want to know when choosing a kit as a newcomer. O0

I agre with Footski that we need a little more info. I would add to his list, what experience have you had in modelling and/or practical work ie with your hands?

It all makes a difference, can you read a plan? do you fancy a scratch build?

Every little helps.

Cheers and welcome to the forum

Another question is 'what floats your boat', so to speak.

Do you fancy a tug, a warship, a torpedo boat, a speedboat, a fishing boat, a sailboat, or a cargo ship?

As a beginner it is going to be a kit of some kind to ease you into the hobby and then choose a type of vessel. That'll  will get you started in the right direction.

Next look at your skills and tools you have and what you feel you would like to attempt. Hopefully elec/scale

I wouldn't aim too high as it might put you off the hobby, something, we all don't want you to do.

Loads of help on this forum if you need it, just SHOUT and you'll get some very good answers from experienced modeller that have been where you are at the moment.

Welcome aboard.  O0

I forgot to add to the above reply.

Joining your local model boat club will be a good thing. As you will have contact with people with the same interests.

Thanks to all who replied to my request for basic starter kit. apologies for the delay in replying - have been abroad for a while. I am fairly competent on the diy front and can handle tools and read plans to a degree. I fancy something millitary, perhaps vintage, electric power and radio control - though i have no knowledge of using this. All info welcome. In the meantime I will check out the boats recommended.

Thanks again.

Bill have you thought of this, everything you said though not quite vintage. Very popular, not to difficult, enjoyable to do, not to big, not to small and sails well. Also plenty of room for detailing and gizmos.  O0

Hi Bill,
I'm stil a newbie and am just finishing the RTTL Vosper from Model Slipways. Very good kit and covers the criteria you are looking for. They are very efficient to deal with and if you run into any problem you can always find some good advise on here.
Hope this helps!
Cheers
