Viking Longship
« on: January 06, 2008, 12:49:11 am »

Who watched the Time Team program this evening on the Viking Longship?  What an absolutely superb program recording the building and sailing of a Viking Longship replica from Denmark to Norway, across the North Sea to Skye, Scotland, through the Hebrides down to the Isle of Man and finally Belfast, thus recreating many a viking voyage.  Manned by a team of 60 mixed nationality and sex crew who kept a similar watch system and used a similar system of responsibility allocation to the Vikings.

It opened my eyes to the conditions the Vikings sailed under and made me realise what an unbeleivable feat of seamanship they performed during such voyages, without the help of navigational aids, modern waterproof clothing and communication systems.

If it is repeated I would highly recommend it.

A superb programme. It leaves you with a great feeling of awe at how those chaps managed to succeed at all. Incredible.

Wish I'd seen that. Did they mark the bearings of the sun on the thwart, so the ship would know the way next time?
