DRIVERS. Save money by putting much larger wheels on the back of your car. That way you will always be going downhill, thereby saving on fuel.

MAKE YOUR postman's day by opening the door as he comes up the path and saying "If there are any bills you can take them back. Ha! Ha! Ha!"

Jam makers, don't buy preserving jars from Lakeland Kitchens at 12 99 a dozen. Simply buy a dozen jars of Asda Smart Price curry sauce at 9p each and throw the rancid muck down the toilet. Hey presto, a dozen jars for 1.08 :-)) :-)) :-))

AVOID DOGS molesting your leg under the dinner table by coating your trousers below the knee with Ralgex or Fiery Jack.

You can always have the last work just utter "yes dear" very softly. Even then it is best not to answer at all if it can be avoided. Mick B.

Use piano wire for your railings rather than brass wire. No more bent railings between the stanchions

Quick Hints & Tips!
« Reply #65 on: July 24, 2015, 04:16:05 pm »

Via PM...

Martin is is possible to have a sticky in the top forum (model boating) for hints and tips? So the more knowledgeable members could give their quick tips to help those of us more mortal forum members? Of course you would have to stipulate its for tips only no discussions as to the pros and cons of the information given- that could be done in the normal forum.

Regards,
Brian.

Sure! You first Brian!

OK here's one I came up with and posted for tug kenny.

Here's an idea for stanchions-

Instead of drilling holes, cut them all to the correct size, then 3-4 at a time clamp them together in a desk vice or pliers. Then where you want your holes use a razor saw from the edge of the stanchion to cut a slot. Once you have done the first batch you can use one of those as a 'jig' to get the next lot of slots in the same place.

Once you have enough stanchions prepared insert the wire. Once you begin to solder the solder will fill in the gap of the slot binding the wire in the centre of the stanchion!

Staying with stanchions. These were from a local stationary shop. Too big for 1/72nd but could be used as stanchions on maybe 1/35th to 1/48? Cheap as chips and easily soldered.

Lastly brass wire. You can buy this from the local model shop K&S is the usual one in 300mm lengths for an arm and a leg for each piece. Or go to ebay on the jewellery section and buy coils of brass wire mine are 10 metre lengths for about £4 a roll. It comes in 0.2mm, 0.4mm. 0.5mm, 0.7mm and 1mm. It is also in two states, soft and half hard.

Cut off what you need hold between two pairs of pliers and pull tight. Then pass the length along an open flame like a blowtorch but the gas hob will work ok2 Once it cools the coil has gone and you are left with a nice straight wire.

Working with LED's, standard or surface mount? Here's a couple of online programs to work out the resistors you need

http://led.linear1.org/led.wiz

http://ledcalc.com/

http://www.hobby-hour.com/electronics/smdcalc.php

The second is particularly good, it will also design your wiring diagram for you. The last one is for surface mount led's and  has a list of multiple calculators at the top left of the page

Back to brass wire.

Forget wire cutters for fine brass wire. For a neat close cut, go out and buy a set of toenail clippers. I kid you not, they are sharp and you can get in close with them and handle wire up to about  0.8mm. I have used them on 1mm but the wire had been pre softened with heat.

Back to soldering brass wire or other fine brass work. Don't use normal flux cored solder it is way too much for the job. Buy solder paste, its a little more expensive than a coil of solder. However because you are applying a small amount to the parts (toothpick) and then heating, you use a lot less.

Toenail cutters are also cheaper than flush cutting side cutters for trimming down cable ties, leaving no sharp corners to catch your fingers on.
