Information on an old Steam Tug from 1910 wanted.
« on: January 27, 2008, 01:03:54 pm »

As many of you are aware I am currently building The Lady T, a twin srew steamer. My knowledge of Tugs of any period is just about nil and I cannot find out anything about her, even if she ever existed or is simply a type of Tug from that period.

Has anybody any ideas as I do want to be as accurate as my limited skills will allow??

Barry, I have had a good search through my copy of `British Steam Tugs` byP.N.Thomas.   There are plenty of `Lady` tugs but no mention of Lady T.   Pete M

Barry,

This is a similar tug that was based in the North East of England.

Hope it helps

Thanks. I have just been looking at that book on Amazon with a view to it helping me with the build. Do you think it will help with detail?

Hi Riggers,

That Waysider looks very close indeed to mine. Do you have any more pics or details about her?

The Waysider was a Lawson Batey tug, I bought the photo of eBay I think in a job lot and I am looking to find out more about the company but other things got in the way.

Barry, there are loads of pictures and drawings as well as historical facts, but I am not so sure that they would be of any help in your particular area.   pete M

Thanks Pererm,

I have found out that she was one of a number built on the Tynne between 1895 to 1898. The only other thing known is that she was used between the West of Ireland and North West England and was thought to be lost in the Irish sea while pulling barges around the time of the 1st World War.

Hi Barry
I have just completed a Mountfleet River Queen and a Graupner Saturn (This week) both small tugs of the 1910 era.

Nothing special to know apart from the Kit instructions and remember they were hard worked machines and it shows.

Additions not supplied are Tow ropes,Mooring ropes and heaving lines.

In those days Port and Stbd Nav light boxes were red and green not black like modern ones

I will bring Photos to Estapona on the 24th
