Hi TT - PJ Sails do a removable one out of C/F for the A Boats. Works a bit like a two part telescope - ie the wider bit is secured in hull and the narrower one (attached to keel) slides up until a tiny shoulder stops it at the hull bottom. Might be usable in other boats ??

I believe that proper model yachts as designed by Mr Hobbs used motorcycle or cycle spokes.

Hi tobyker can I also sign on as a fan of Mr. Hobbs?  I have some of his books.  Also I met his sister many years ago, she used to run a small engineering company in Herts.  She gave us some of his books that he used to review for a Model Engineer magazine and they are in our club library.

Hi TT,
For fixing diferent weight keels to my Thames Barge I use 6mm studding (threaded rod) with a 6mm wingnut inside the hull.
Can't the Dingdan man help?.

roycv - I have a Hobbs designed yacht built by an uncle's father in 1922 - all proper bread and butter stitched together with wire. As I measured the sails they fell apart. In the shed "pending rebuild".

Hi tobyker, just got back to this thread!  Which Mr. Hobbs sailing boat have you got? I recently restored a couple of sailing boats from the 50's, on the first boat I sewed the sails.  On the second boat I used Hemmite ironed between the hems of the sails.  Once the templates of the sails are made it is very quick and appears to stand up to the wind and water.

Not sure which boat, Roy. She was built 1922 by an uncle's father, 'cos he couldn't sleep very well after his experiences in the trenches. The deck is a single piece of pine, about 1/8" thick - can't get the stuff, nowadays.
