Vince, depending on their size of the meshes, but I have had on a similar problem so good results with curtains.
Have a try on that in a b&q or curtain-shop for some rests.

There's a material dressmakers use, I think called tull.  It is a fine mesh material.  I use it for things like flight deck safety netting and it might just the right scale effect at 1/96 for your use.
