MMM Nangee
« on: July 04, 2006, 11:13:49 am »

I am in the process of building a MMM Nangee and was wondering if anyone had built the same, and if so what setup they had?

Hi I'm the Pirates son, my first build with Dad was Nangee as recommended by Brian and my boat club. I wish I had done some picture research before building as there is a brill tug called 'Zeeleeuw' which I have called mine but I've had to retro fit her out as I built her according to the original plans. Fan motor well forward on a long shaft so as to get the best exit angle, 2x 12 v 3.5 amp gellies running as 12v so I have 7 amp which lasts on endurance for 3 and a quarter real miles, driving a 48 mm prop shop 4 blade prop in a 50mm kort with a massive rudder blade added on. (no one can out manouver her with a single prop). Rear deck is flush with large hatch for maintenance push fitted /vaseline sealed. I put a large internal bulk head made of 10mm ply and atatched the tow hook too it, I don't think it needed this but it does make it very strong. The scale speed was confirmed too me by a watching former tug captain as he said the centre wave along the bow is very deep at 10 knots and the front of these tugs thrusts downwards a little with out a tow behind. Trust this helps. Please contact if piccies would help.

I built a NANGEE a few years ago...
I fitted her with a 12 volt fan motor from MMM driving a 60 mm prop in a fixed kort nozzle with a steerable rudder...This made a very powerful wee tug...
I used to pull a 12 foot GRP dinghy with me in it...
One modification i made to the deckhouse was to chamfer the front angle of the deckhouse.(similar to PORTGARTH). This took away the box look of the deckhouse...
I later sold the boat to another member of our club but it was stolen from our clubhouse & is still on the missing list...
AS you can see from the picture I called her "ALBA"

Norry

Very nice tug. I like the chamfered deckhouse; an idea I would like to copy when I get round to mine (scheduled for the coming winter - if I can finish the current project in time) is that OK?

Has anyone fitted two motors?

Cheers

Doug...

I,ve seen one or two models of NANGEE with twin motors...It certainly makes it more manouverable.
If you are thinking of a single screw unit i would recommend fitting a steerable Kort Nozzle & a bow thruster...Mines was a bit slow on the turn but would pull you off your feet on the power side...
I later fitted a  12 volt Hectoperm motor for my son to use in tug towing competitions...
I was planning on fitting a bow thruster to mine but was made a nice offer for it so I sold it first...
As I said earlier it is now on the stolen models list...
The chamfer on the forward end of the deckhouse sure changes the look of the whole boat... I have no problems with you or anyone else copying this idea...
I only wish i had kept her and completed the changes i had planned for her...
I enjoyed sailing her on our pond at Largs Model Boat Club & on Loch Lomond whilst pulling our fishing boat with me in it... Here is a picture of her in our pond...
This picture was taken before the deckhouse was altered, You can see the different look it gives...

The NANGEE was based on the 2 tugs that HOLYHEAD TOWING had for the single point mooring system for oil tankers off the River Mersey...The 2 tugs were called "AFON ALAW" & "AFON BRAINT"
One of these tugs is now called "ZEEELUUW" under Dutch ownership...

Norry,

Thanks for the reply and the info therein. The chamfer changes an ugly duckling into a quite attractive boat IMO.

Cheers

I will be fitting a single steerable 60mm kort nozzle into mine. i have decided to keep the deckhouse the normal shape though. that is a very nice model, i hope mine will look that good when its finished.

I would recommend a bow thruster also...Especially if you want to use it for tug towing contests...

Someone else thought that my boat looked  good...And then stole the bloody thing...

...Happy Building...

I would install a bow thruster but there are some issues-

1 -being cost and the other is that i will only be using a 2-channel radio system becuse i cant afford to purchase a 4-? chanel system.

thanks for the reccomendations though

You can still fit a bow thruster with 2 channel radio...
You set switches either side of the rudder post or servo,,,So when you put the rudder hard over it switches the bow thruster on...Its a bit primitive, But it does work...

I fitted my Nangee with single steerable kort, 68mm prop in 70mm kort. I find it manouvres ahead and astern great, put a good barge behind and a bit of drag and she steers great.

Latest incarnation, I have now fitted smoke unit from JJc. Just got to get the timing right, can't fit anything else in now, thats the lot. Going smaller, my next build is the Mobile Marine Models Damen 1906, not building it as the Anglian Man though.

I don't think you will need a bow thruster with twin shottle drives. they will be able to make this boat go side ways on there own. Not heard anything about Bryans shottle drives though.

My Nangee is full of gadgets, it has fully operational nav lights, Cat engine sound, working fire monitors (one more still to fit!!), ships horn sounds, exhaust smoke generator (JJC), and working radar scanner. It still carries about 6 ounces of lead ballast and it is powered by two 3.5AmpHr 12 volt batteries. Its a great hull to work with, at the moment I am considering converting it to twin motors, presently it is single screw with steerable kort nozzle.(70mm). Twins would have to be 60mm. I am presently working out how to make a working towing winch. got to get rid of that ballast, it is a waste!!!
