Knotted boat fenders
« on: February 05, 2008, 11:41:14 pm »

I'm after a bit of expertize again, does anyone know of a website or a book where I can find a tutorial on making knitted/knotted/crocheted fender making, I need ten for my latest project & it's coming out at anywhere between £30 & £50, shocked? I nearly bought a round. Wouldn't mind having a go at it myself, how hard can it be?  :-\

These do seem to be the rage on Ebay at the moment.

I seem to remember the old cotton reel with nails around the top was a good method of making tubular weave. Anyone have the circuit diagrams and instructions ?  8)

Cheers...Ken

Instructions here for spool knitting.

http://sweaterscapes.com/spool.htm

You can use any even numberof pins, just make a larger bobbin with a bigger hole. The last one I made used 6 pins and I then stuffed the inside with acrylic toy stuffing to make the shape I wanted.

Give it a go, a ball of dishcloth cotton and a little time and patience is all it needs.  If you can build a boat then you can make a fender!!

Thanks very much for your offer Barrie they look very good indeed  O0, I will bear it very much in mind (my wife wasn't too helpful when I asked for help, "something off" I think she said  :o), I really would like to give it a go myself first though and I'll be studying the info supplied by gribeauval,

thanks to all, Andy

I recall there was another thread on this last year. One suggestion was a knitted triangle rolled up so as to give the thicker center of a bow fender.

An old tip - I was told pyjama cord looks OK, cut and stuffed as required, to make it look old/used soak it in cold tea for a week to colour it. Tea total, or back to WI, maybe? But do people own pyjamas now?

This should be put in a "How to do it" section on its own....Brilliant

I've obtained the dishcloth cotton, just waiting for a chance to get out on the lathe to knock up a bobbin now

From Gribeuval's first picture it looks like you pick the right sized tube and lash your pins round the outside, saves the lathe work. BTW when did wooden bobbins disappear  :-\ :-\

Thanks Barry, I did in fact do a search before asking as I always do but sadly that thread didn't show up  ::)
I don't see anything on that thread about spool knitting so it would seem we've covered some new ground here which will be of value to some, kind of you to point it out though  :-\

Found a nice piece of purpleheart for the job so turned it down & knocked some 1inch pins in. The knitting is OK but I'm very slow, practise is the answer I guess
